It started one weekend, many years ago, when someone turned me on to a Sennheiser MD 421. I was hooked almost at once. I tried to keep my mic usage to the weekends, but later it became almost a daily habit.
Following one mic after another led me to many countries until I ended up in Finland. While here I tried my first LDC. What clarity!
Over the last 5 years my taste for a more a refined mic experience grew and I was offered more exotic brands, AKG, Rode, Shure, and Neumann. I tried the 103s and the U87s but they were not to my liking. Then, out of the blue I was turned on to a U47! Wow ! Now that was something! But so was the price!
Since that day - the desire for a U47, or a U47 clone grew in my heart. A dealer in Germany wanted to turn me on to the Blackspade UM17, and suggested I try it or the Beesneez Oliver.
I loved the sound of the U47 but could not justify the cost. Even a LDC fix from Michael Joly could not satisfy my desire. I found something, not quite a U47 but...
Now I need to decide between a FET and a Tube. Below is a link to a recording.
What do you think? Which is better for my voice, A or B ?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Mac

I think #2 is the Tube. I prefer #1, FET or not for your voice. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

I'm with Lance....
#1 is the mic for your voice.
#2 is the tube mic. I hear mud. _________________ Don Brookshire

A/B tests are the worst... they force you to be hyper-critical
That being said... #1 suits you nicely, and I agree that #2 is a little muddy in comparison. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

OT... In a previous life, I used to be in the air transport IT business. I went out drinking with the Bergen ATC crowd once. Dangerous. Very dangerous. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I like specimen number 1 - nice clarity and presence.
I like specimen number 2 - just not as much as number 1. _________________ J. Christopher

Thanks guys for helping me to decide what is my go-to choice, the FET!
No more chasing after the "dream sound" from a tube mic. Of course, if someone gives me a U 47 I won't refuse it. But the search has ended today!
If you are interested to know, both recordings were on the same mic, with the same micpre, etc. The mic, the Lewitt lct 940, is both a FET and a tube mic. (It certainly does not sound like a U47 but it is still a decent tube mic).
The real question for me was which selection sounded better on my voice and the FET won 5 - 0 !
I can choose full FET (which is what I used on the recording) or full tube (the second recording), or I can blend in how much tube I want by dailing it in on the power supply unit.
Thanks for helping me get more focused!
All the best,
