Corporate-speak is getting on my last nerve.
Phrases like "going forward" (to mean "from now on") are particularly irksome. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

Anyone who thinks the phrase "the next level" has any imact any more is a moron.
I also don't care for "impact" as a verb unless it's about teeth, but I know I'm impossibly outnumbered. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

When my wife and I hear "grow your business" and a number of other in sayings we cringe. You may increase your business, or improve your business, but golly gosh (as my dad or Gomer Pyle would have said) I didn’t realize a business grew by cellular division??? Oops, I didn’t seem to think of the proliferation of cellular phone towers or cites that do seem to increasing at an astounding rate. Maybe all those metal boxes near the cell towers are really cyborgs that have found a new way to reproduce.
Another example we hear on local TV is the misuse of plural and singular as in, “This afternoon fifteen people were injured in a freeway crash, none was killed." That is from a NBC owned station. I guess this will happen as the dumbing down of America continues.
There seem to be more of these bizarre word usages popping up every day. Then I think of the 60’s and 70’s and what our parents must have thought of “groovy”, “cool” etc.
Then I think of the companies out there, the agency people and young management types in any industry that may be half my age probably think it is “cool” to coin a new meaning for an old term.
Sorry to rant, but I do feel better.

Actually, my darlin'-- "none" is also singular.
My dictionary has this to say about usage of the word "none":
USAGE It is sometimes held that none can take only a singular verb, never a plural verb:: none of them is coming tonight, rather than | none of them are coming tonight. There is little justification, historical or grammatical, for this view. None is descended from Old English n?n, meaning ‘not one,’ and has been used for around a thousand years with both a singular and a plural verb, depending on the context and the emphasis needed.

This is the subject of much grammatical arm wrestling and it appears both sides are right. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

Courvo, I couldn't resist the picture when I read the monocle and smoking jacket line about you. That photo is of Charles Coburn, a memorable character actor of the 30's and 40's.
I'm sure you'll look much better than an Indian cow when you're newsman emeritus at NBC.

Deirdre,
Count me as another of the small, but determined (and heavily outnumbered) fringe group who know "impact" isn't a verb. _________________ Be well,
