Hello everyone, first of I would like to say that this is my first post, and the commuity here seems genuinly fantastic.

I'm new to the VO world, and coming from other gear boards where there seems to just be alot of noise, and not much real help. So I'm glad to be here Smile

My question:

I'm getting ready to purchase my first set of powered studio monitors. Current signal chain: Mic -> Art TubeMP Project preamp -> Presonus Firebox -> firewire into computer.

Now, if i understand correctly, I'll use the 1/4" from the back of the Firebox to the monitors. Question is... Do I get 1/4" TRS cables, or 1/4" TRS to XLR cables to hook up to the monitors? And are all 1/4" TRS cables the same? i.e. can I use a 'patch' cable for this kind of purpose?

Welcome to the craziness!

It doesn't matter whether you use a balanced XLR connection or a balanced TRS connection. Whatever is most convenient for you, and whatever connections your new studio monitors support. Don't use unbalanced 1/4" TS cables if possible - unbalanced cables are much more susceptible to RF interference (although in the short lengths you'll be using to connect monitors it still probably wouldn't matter).

Good luck!

What Graeme said.

Plus, isn't the ART into the Firebox redundant? Couldn't you just use the Firebox preamp, or do you like the sound of the ART preamp?

Less is more, 60% of the time.

Yes, but in this case, 40% of the gain is lost. Ok, not really, but I had to get in the other 40% somehow.

I've found that the firebox preamps just aren't that great for driving condensor mics. It could totally be operator error, I'm not ruling that out, but when I go directly in I have to have the gain on the firebox nearly all the way up.

Plus the Art Tube does add a touch of warmth that I like, and it drives the mic much easier. In this case, my mic right now is an AKG Perception 200.

That makes sense. The ARTs actually sound pretty good. Just don't open either one all the way up, or you'll get noise.
