I'm narrating one of those Forgotten Realms quadrilogies and I ran into this gem just now:

Quote:
Despite the distractions, the young wizard uttered the spell’s final syllables looking into Xaerna’s eyes. “Xymmaoth Piurasjk Atox!”

This is just ridiculous. They gave me a pronunciation guide, which covers maybe 5% of these crazy names and words, and the web is full of these terms from D&D fans, but there are almost no pronunciations out there. And I just know some rabid fan is going to complain, bitterly.

ARRRRGH! Rantus Maximus over for now.

The gentleman says to contact him for access to the list, but he has no message button on his FB page, and his linked blog page also has no email link. I don't have time to futz around. Arrgh.

The above incident occurred a few pages into a chapter that had six new characters in it, and the author does his best to keep the narrator guessing who is who with names and nicknames and alternate descriptions drifting in one by one. I had to chart the first several pages to figure out (guess) who was who and what voice to use. I do all that and then run into the spell noted above (I cold read usually...saves me time usually). Here's my reaction when I saw it:

Pretty good insane/evil laugh, huh? Very realistic.

Bruce, this very thing is one of the criteria I use when deciding whether to audition for certain ACX titles. So many of them are now incorporating bizarre foreign names and weird linguistics like this, and for me, I have to decide whether it's worth the stipend or hourly rate or not to try to wade through it all.

Looks like a nightmare already.....with more fun to come.

I have also passed on several titles just for that same reason of excess characterization and obscure, foreign, or manufactured language.. However looks like you're committed now. I'll be buying this one when its out to see how a master does it.

I fixed the link and made it public. When you make it private on SoundCloud it really means private, not like YouTube.

LOVE IT Bruce! When I get to that kind of pronunciation...I usually just cuss. That is the basic difference between the two of us I guess. Ninja

Haha! I love it. Sometimes all you can do is laugh. When something like that creeps up on ya, it is either hilarious or extremely frustrating. Depending in how the rest of the narration (or day) is going.

Todd, I'm with ya, man. My favorite reads anyway are non-fiction, biographies, true crime, etc. Except I don't find them boring or bland. Usually.

This is why I love being European. I get crap from Americans for pronouncing foreign names the way they're supposed to be pronounced!!

It's ok, I'm fine. No, really. Perfectly fine. Ooooh turkey!
