I would NOT recommend one in the studio. We have one as the family computer and the fan revs up and down in direct proportion to CPU usage.
I "got mines" a while back so they may be quieter now, but I wouldn't count on it. |
Good point Deebs. Mine is about 4 months old (Intel Dual Core) and only very, very rarely does the fan crank up to a noticable level. But when it does....fasten your seat belt and secure small children. _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

Really? Never hear a whisper out of mine. It was up to 95ºF today and it didn't break a sweat. My Dual G4 however was screaming in pain.
On the subject of pain, I picked up an upgrade of my DAW today. 2 little CDs and an instruction manual that runs to 1074 pages.....WTF. And I thought all this software was supposed to create a paperless society.

To be more specific...during "normal operation" I've never had fan noise be a issue. Oddly, during an install of some optional software that's on the MAC OS CD...my iMac G5 howled like a banshee! _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

Another possibility for we of the Mac persuasion who might like to run Audition (or any other Windows program). Parallels is an alternative to Boot Camp. http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/ In fact, it's even mentioned on the Mac site. http://arstechnica.com/journals/apple.ars/2006/6/19/4380
http://www.apple.com/getamac/windows.html
I don't have Parallels but have heard positive things about it. You can download a free demo on the web site. Also, they're taking $30 off the $80 normal price, but only through the end of today (7/15).
And while not directly to this thread, we got our off-to-college daughter a MacBook to take along. It is a very sweet machine, and yes, I'm jealous. |

Tom, if there is anyway possible, put the tower on the otherside of your wall. You will be glad you did!! _________________ Brian Haymond

You also might want to check out the refresh closet at your Apple store. These are items that have been returned, most often unopened, and they can not sell them as new. The discount varies but I got my MBP 10% off the list price. The back up powercord I purchased was a 45% discount. The store in Chicago often has a pretty good supply. Worth asking about. |

Tom,
Firewire, unlike USB, can be daisy-chained. Your Mackie Firewire Option Card has two ports. One will connect to your computer, the other to your hard drive. I daisy-chain Firewire connectiosn to drives, computer, audio card, etc. all the time. Mac and PC, both. _________________ Be well,

Hey Bob,
USB devices may also be daisy-chained. The speed with USB 2.0 is comparable to Firewire. Long-term throughput may suffer a bit with USB, but it can be done.
Up to 127 devices (when using some outboard equipment) may be daisy-chained together to make - well, quite a system.

Frank,
Yes, one can daisy chain a series of USB hubs, but USB drives or other devices themselves (at least in my experience) don't daisy chain.
Firewire, on the other hand, can connect a long series of devices, one to another without the need for hubs.
I was using the term daisy chain more in the latter context, but you are correct that with USB hubs, you can connect a significant number of devices together at once. _________________ Be well,

No. The G5s are running the old PowerPC processor. You need an Intel processor to run Windows, and Apple has not released a tower with Intel yet.
I don't know how noisy they are. I'd be willing to bet they're louder than an iMac, but that's just conjecture. |

I've got a two year old G5 and it can scream like a banshee (relatively speaking) if it's doing something complex. It has something like 8 little fans in it the salesman told me. Even at straight voice recording which is a low memory task it makes enough noise to be heard in my fairly decently sound-dampened room. Thank goodness for gating. It also makes a lot of heat, so during long narrations my 11x12 studio can get pretty steamy pretty quick. To move it out of the room is expensive in special cabling and I've got no easy route for an exhaust vent.
Hey, some people spend a lot of money building a sauna, and I got mine for free with my $4,000 computer.
