I'm in the market for a nice set of cans (primarily for editing), but am on a limited budget. Any recommendations?
Thanks!

I found some great ones at Radio Shack 5 years ago for about $27 a pair. Just make sure whatever you get sounds "accurate", i.e. not too bassy or tinny, and is light enough to be comfortable for many hours of wearing at a time.

I would go with some AKG. They seem to be the standard in many studios.....check their cheaper models out. I use the Sony MDR V700, which are like $120. They are more on the bass end of the spectrum but they sound incredible. Just like speakers, if you listen to a lot of stuff on them, you know what you mixes should sound like in comparison.
I also have a pair of Koss headphones from way back that sound great also. I may have paid $40 for them. _________________ Ben

Sennheiser HD280 Pro-lovely. I've used them for 3 years now.
Sony 7506-very nice and used in a LOT of major studios. I have these as well.
Sample them all and let your ears be the judge. |

Sony MDR 7506 (don't know if they still make them) - they're pretty damn flat. Good buy. Alot of the other MDR's are too bottom heavy - nightclub DJ's might like them - so stay away from those.
But, in the end, if you know your headphones you should be ok. Always do an A/B (or even C) comparison when you get new cans (or monitors for that matter).

Glad this came up, since I've been wondering whether anyone uses, or has any use for Bose noise-cancelling phones. I tried some that belonged to the guy next to me on a plane recently...very lusciously quiet. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Just to revive this post....I just purchased a pair of Sennheiser 280 ($99)HD headphones....man!!! they sound excellent. Much more true than the Sony MDR700 DJ headphones ($130) that I have. Lows are solid and the frequencies sound even and pure.....I love them! And they are comfortable to wear.
Hope this helps anyone shopping for some phones in the future. _________________ Ben

I've used Sennheiser headphones for years. Excellent value for the money pretty much every time.
AKG phones are also good, and a similar value for the money, but not as many models and price points from which to choose. _________________ Be well,

I think they do still make them. I just bought a pair a few weeks ago from BSW (and love them).

I can't believe we have a headphones post and no one mentioned the Koss Pro4AA. They're built like a brick and sound great.

Sony 7509 is the big thing over here on this side of the Atlantic. It's not el cheapo, but it will definitely be a pleasure using it all the time. And... if you Do manage to ruin some parts... every sparepart is available from Sony.
