At VOICE2012 I was treated to a display of a room full of people cheering, shouting and bordering on hysteria when 3 actors were interviewed. The petite lady was charm personified and the two gentlemen who looked like a banker and a crime family boss (is there a difference) were forgetable save a quite brilliant song. Were they worth the praise, worship and adoration from the assembled masses? They thought so and that's all that really matters.

This got me to thinking about the GREAT and AWESOME voice ackers in the UK which in turn, thanks to a conversation on an entirely different subject, reminded me of a great British raconteur and wit who brought so much to a simple cartoon series.

Kenneth Williams ....Yes, I know ...WHO?

Nice!! I really liked how each character had a different timber. His range is fantastic.

It was generally accepted that if a TV chat show had a guest list which looked in danger of falling flat the "Get out of Jail free card" was to book Kenneth Williams.

Ahhhh... Kenneth Williams. Not only fabby, but bona. You made me dig out my "Around The Horne" recordings! As a young lad growing up, the BBC provided the soundtrack to my life. It all seemed pretty subversive and edgy at the time... which I guess it was.

As for American audiences... they can be the absolute antithesis of reserved, and mostly aspire to make daytime TV audiences seem well-behaved (life imitating art). I've actually been in an audience where it seemed de rigueur to bark like a dog when welcoming someone to the stage.

Sorry Philip... it's just culture-shock and it's something that still slaps me around the head once in a while after all my years here. It's the physical manifestation of the. "Woot, awesome dude" over-exuberance, excessive use of meaningless superlatives and jumping up and down howling like a banshee whilst in the safety of a large group, syndrome.

In summary... they ain't got no bleedin' decorum Wink

But, (to use a tired old cliché) if your socks are awesome... what can you say about The Grand Canyon?

Yes, it is all cultural*, but, like Philip, I do find it embarrassing to be in the middle of troop of gibbons who start to hoot, wail and punch the air at the slightest provocation. There's nothing wrong with a simple, "Good job, old chap", delivered with sincerity and a benevolent smile.

*the inexorable and inevitable downward spiral into tribal behaviour, the expression of any feeling or desire as an extreme, and the only allowable position on anything, a polar one. Wink

Deebs, you have no idea how happy it makes me to have brought a smile (however fleeting) to your face.

Hang in there...

American audiences scare me sometimes.

If there's gonna be hooting, cheering, and overall exuberant behavior from the mass entity called 'the audience'; then there better be a really good show being put on.

Why do people (well, men mostly) yell, "Get in the hole!" at golf tournaments? It must be that US golf crowd mentality, as I can't think of any other time it would be appropriate.

utahans have a weird tendency to clap a lot, at the wrong times, at ballets, plays, etc.

People who clap in between the movements of classical music are the bane of my existence. They make me want to wait outside in a dark alley for them after the concert.

They'd think twice if they knew they were messing with a male flute player.

I quite like audience participation, sometimes it's appropriate.

Pia Zadora was cast to play the lead role in The Diaries of Anne Frank and her acting ability was soon exposed in the full glare of theatre lights. The audience decided with one accord to "Get involved".

Scene - German Soldiers raid the house and begin searching.

"She's in the attic" shouts the audience
