VO-BB - 19 YEARS OLD!

I am new to the VO business and wondered what the correct way to record a two-person script? Example: Man and Woman. Do you read the character's line, pause the appropriate amount of time for the other character's line, then proceed to the next?

Ideally, you want to be in the studio with the other voice. Getting the natural rhythm of interaction is tough without face-to-face.

That said, if you must work without your partner, forget the pregnant pause. The producer will fix it in post-production.

Well....you should leave some space between each of your lines so that the producer can cut 'n paste easily.
Make sure you react appropriately to what the other person is saying & there should be no problem.

if you can - at least get the other person on the phone - record your bits on your end while she records her bits on her's. then the producer can cut them together.

I forgot to say that these are MP3 auditions being done at home, so I have not gotten the job yet, and have no idea who they will hire for the other role(s)

For and man and woman audition just do your lines with either no space between lines or a little bit...it depends on what sounds best to you. I've even overlapped them on occasion when it sounded right.

Unless they ask you to record both voices in a two-man script, don't. Just do one set and follow the spacing suggestions above.

Hi Terry,

What you always have to do in a dialogue is play off of the antagonist. It is just getting a feel for how you would reply if actually taking to that person.

There are several ways to do it if the other person is not there and you are recording your lines.

1. Read THEIR lines too as you think they would speak. Then just edit theirs out.
You are playing off of yourself but if you put yourself in their backstory you'll have the feel for how to respond.

2. Have someone, anyone, read the other part along with you. Off mic is fine for them and it might help your rythum. Then again just easily edit them out and send the finished script.

3. Do the other persons part in your head and then speak again. One thing to understand is pauses DO NOT MATTER between parties in your recording. They are easy to take out before sending the file.
