So Todd, are you saying that you think he'll get better action there than at SkinDocs.com?

(I've heard that one works better for some people than the other...)

I have the feeling that both the student and the VOist he hires at this rate will both get what they deserve.

doug - it just depends upon how an individual professional physician prefers to waster his/her marketing dollars.

I hope he is really only using the audio version as a study aid. There so much you have to learn. Each person learns differently. When I was in law school we used bar review tapes in addition to other study methods like outlines and flash cards.

I used to listen to the review tapes while walking. I even recorded myself reading outlines by subject.

I hope that is what he is doing. The other prospect is scary. Remember, they call the person who graduated as last in class ranking Doctor. That is scary and I have met a few.

Two bucks says the client isn't really a med student but the publisher of the book. Any takers?

Since when does a med STUDENT have a couple grand to blow on an extravagance?

I wouldn't call it an extravagance, Frank. And med students have massive student loans, (not to mention often very rich parents), so I wouldn't bet that it ISN'T a student.

Besides, I'm betting the publishers of these types of books are smart enough to know they WOULDN'T make good audiobooks. With the amount of illustrations that are probably crucial to the learning process, it doesn't make sense to make a textbook like this into audio.

Lots of good comments here about both the job poster and the audition responders. But, I was actually wondering about the legality of this. I'm assuming that the book in question is not PD, and the student is obviously not the rights-holder, yet he's commissioning an audiobook production from a professional VO ... and I'm using the terms very loosely indeed, but in essence, that's the plan. If this gets out, possibly given/sold to fellow students, it could be argued that this is detrimental to the sale of the original book and would impact any "legal" production of an audio version that the rights-holder may have planned.

I'm certainly not a supporter of the draconian copyright & IP protection laws proposed by SOPA/PIPA/ACTA etc., but if I was the rights-holder here, I'd have my lawyer on speed-dial.

And after all of this, it would appear that V123 may have pulled the lead, although I can't say with certainty. I only know that when I went to my 'deleted' leads files, it was nowhere to be found.

If they haven't pulled it, they should.

The project is still there and apparently open. When you made your initial post I recalled having seen that lead, but a while back. And, indeed, I received (and deleted) the notification back on 1/6/12 (job posted 1/4/12). He was seeking 50 auditions and must have had an original deadline that has come and gone because it is now listed as "Extended." The current deadline is 3/31/12.

From reading between the lines, this job demonstrates why I don't get all up in arms about low-ball offers on Voice123. So far, the grand total of responses has been 15 and I assume the reason he has extended the job is because those few replies he has received have been of a quality commensurate with his budget. In other words, they have all SUCKED!

So, whenever I see some ridiculously low budget on a project posted on Voice123, I don't complain that Voice123 allows them; I just hope that nobody good replies to them. If somebody posts a $25 job and all he gets in return is $25 voiceovers, that's OK with me. Maybe a few of those people will learn the old "you get what you pay for" lesson and start making their budgets a bit more realistic.

Maybe the original poster of that ad should spend his time getting someone to just read it out loud to him (but not with a blankie and soft music in the background). Or, maybe that wannabe doc should just quite wasting time and actually buckle down to read the book. Nobody said medical school was gonna be easy.

And, the point about the legality is valid. The student isn't going to get too far with a record for breaking the law...

Diane... I don't want to minimize any dermatological complaints, but let's be grateful that this guy isn't studying to be a neurologist !
