I did, I was and the most important piece of equipment in a voice over studio is the MK1 Marketable Voice followed by a pair or finely tuned off the shelf critically EQed ear drums Smile

hahahahaha.....funny you should mention that Philip! I just added that to my proposed setup! Cost an arm and a leg, but as you said, it's the most important thing in a voice over studio. So here is what I ordered from zzounds last night:

An MK1 Marketable Voice.

A pair or finely tuned off the shelf critically EQed ear drums.

Studio Projects C1 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone (to go with the 1st item on the list)

Mackie 1202-VLZ Pro 12-Channel Mixer

Edirol UA1000 10-Chanel 24/96 Audio Interface

with UPS 2nd day shipping..... $971.80

You can't turn a Sampson mic into a U87 by futzing with the bass and treble knobs.

I tried the Antares Mic Modeler but all it did was change the EQ, a couple of times for the better, but it never turned my MXL V67 into a Neuman U47. You can make subtle improvements but don't kid yourself--you can't turn lead into gold.

Let us be the judge of that....link us to a sample of your Psuedo U47.....if so I'm getting his set up and then some of that wax too!

I have a "Wind Changer" that is used when one is grilling outdoors and the wind is coming from the wrong direction - you put it up and change the winds direction ... I also have a bridge in San Francisco for sale - cheap...

I have used the Antares... it has some pluses, but it does not make one mic sound like another... it allows you perceptually hear some similiarities of the mic you are trying to emulate... If you want the sound of U87 - buy one.

The equipment you use can make a bit of difference, but its how YOU sound on a mic that makes the difference in IF you are going to please the client and make money with your talent.

When recording vocalists for music I may use two or three different mics until I find the one that works for that particular artist. It may be a U87, it may be an AKG 414, or it may be a Marshall MXL V67-G...or any of the mics that I have in my collection. Make YOUR microphone YOURS. Own it, and it will work for you. If you like the sound of a particular microphone and YOUR voice when speaking through it, then that is the microphone for you - buy one and be happy...

I was intrigued by this thread, so I did a little experiment to see if I could get my SM57 to sound like my U87. It took a little while, but I finally figured out a way.

1. Spray both mic capsules with WD-40
2. Wrap them in a wet towel.
3. Stuff them into the pockets of the heaviest jacket you own (It must be the same jacket, left and right pockets.)
4. Hang the jacket in the cupboard and close the door.
5. Go into the bathroom
6. Shout

MAN!...Identical.

But in all seriousness, as Frank said:

A $100 mic can give you 90% of what you can achieve with a $3,000 mic. And that will work for 95% of applications.

In other words; For most VO applications, using a quality, expensive mic is like driving a Bugatti Veyron in a 30mph zone.

But...ah! when you DO get onto the autobahn.

All that faffing about proves nothing! My test was a tub of goose grease and a U87. Plug both into mixer and position all pots to -00db level, go to the lavatory having recorded on left and right channels the sound of a loud shirt.....Now that is what I call identical.

I've been agonizing over this subject for months. Finally decided to go with one of the new Mackie Onyx mixers with the firewire card.
As far as I can tell, this board takes care of it all. Pre-amps, phantom power (so that brick of a power supply that came with my NTK can be used to hold the door shut), analog to digital conversion then straight to the comp.

Still need to pull off the shrink wrap and fire it up.

Hi Tom, Welcome to the vo-bb.

The NTK is a decent mic. I have used it for the last year. The "brick" is the only power supply you can use for the NTK. You will see it has a special pin jack made exclusively for it. When plugging it in to your board or pre-amp use the Line, not Phantom. (You would probably have a fire on your hands after a while.) Allow 15 minutes for it to warm up to give you the best sound possible.

I recently bought an MKH-416 and there is a world of difference in the sound between the two. The NTK has a nice mellow tone and the 416 just powers its way the front. (Kind of like the loud guy at a party who doesn't know about personal space.) I can see why promo people use it religiously.
