Hi all. I used the SEARCH function but came up empty-handed. Perhaps you can help. I have a basic subscription to RhinoSoft FTP Voyager, which I used only to upload audio to and occasionally download audio from a radio station with which I used to be involved. Hence, when I open from my desktop shortcut, the interface automatically goes to my directory (bottom half of screen) and that of the station (upper half). I can't for the life of me figure out how to set it up so that I can direct (potential) clients and others to a place where they can listen to and/or download audio (or look at and/or download photos) from my files. The site was set up several years ago to allow for remote transfer to/from radio station, and the knowledge base and other aspects of RhinoSoft and Voyager are useless thus far. Does anyone have any nugget of information (or the foggiest idea what I'm talking about)?? Thx.

Bettie,

You are going in the right direction, your just off a few degrees.

First, you will need more than just an FTP client. You will need an FTP Server. Which would consequesntly, be hosted by you on your PC from your Static IP address through your ISP. Have I confused you well?

You will need a place (or host) for the FTP site, this sometimes is available with your ISP; or if you have the ability with an FTP server, you can host it on your machine/computer with it's connection to the internet. Then you may do as you are hoping.

An FTP Client, allows access to and from an FTP Server. It does not HOST the site. It's probably "clear as mud" now, I know, but research FTP SERVERS, not CLIENTS.

If you have questions, please PM or call.

Thanks as always, Frank. I had a feeling you'd respond, and I appreciate it. I'll look into that server aspect and see what I can come up with, and look forward to getting together with you up the hill!

Hey Bettie,

Do you REALLLY want to enter into the realm of ftp? I personally find it slow and somewhat unreliable, therefore I'm very hesitant to make it a method that I offer regularly to clients.

I have been using www.yousendit.com for about the past 8-months (give or take a few months) and I and my clients have been very happy with it. Basically, you upload the file and the system sends an automatic e-mail to any recipient you like and then allows them to download it at their convenience. Alternately, you can provide a direct link to the file download if you prefer.

Now, there is a catch... it's free... but only for a maximum individual file size of 100mb and up to 5 downloads of each file that you upload... however, if you buck up $4.95 / month you get 1 gig / upload and 100 downloads of each file.

Anyway, it may or may not suit your purposes, but it's worth taking a look at!

Good Luck.

Brian

Brian is giving you a good tip, Betty.

You Send It Dot Com is a great tool to have in your toolbox.

I sent about six minutes of uncompressed audio as an AIFF file to a producer today, and as always, it worked smoothly and trouble free.

I sometimes FTP audio files to my server for a client to download, but for the most part, I think it is just as easy to go to www.yousendit.com and park the audio file there - which means I don't use up my own bandwidth and transfer allotment.
