I cringe at the Spanish names and words that have been murdered in the Southwest. |

Ages ago I narrated the Texas tourist and visitors bureau's "tour through the state" video and totally needed a local to help me through the pronunciations even though I know Spanish quite well. Most are pronounced in a slightly Americanized way but then they go nuts and call places like San Jacinto (which should be Sahn Hah-SEEN-toh), san Juh-SIN-toh.
But they got nothing on the Brits and Americans who just changed the names of cities they couldn't pronounce in places like Italy:
Roma = Rome
Venezia = Venice
Genova = Genoa
Napoli = Naples
Livorno = Leghorn (what the heck??)*
They're not hard to say. What was the deal, old dudes?

*Livorno used to be called Legorno a few hundred years ago so it came from that, but STILL....... _________________ VO-BB Member #31 Enlisted June, 2005

Not too far from Lexington there is a city called Versailles.
Locally it is pronounced vur-SALES. Also very close by is Athens which is pronounced AY-thins. Go figure. _________________ Roger Tremaine

One of the many counties in Texas is Bexar County. It is pronounced without the 'x' (bear).
One of the streets in Austin is San Jacinto Blvd. It is pronounced exactly as it's spelled: a hard 'J,' as in jar. _________________ Mike

In Utah there is a city named "Tooele" (too-will-a).
I will leave the pronunciation up to you. No one in the state even knows the proper way to say the name or it's origination.

Creve Coeur = Creev Core.
Bellefontaine - = BELL-fountain.
La Plata = la PLATE uh
And just a couple of blocks from here, there are people who live on GO-thee street. (spelled Goethe) _________________ Dangerous.

Here in CT (down near where Chuck lives) we have a Thames River that's pronounced just the way it looks rather than "Tems" like the original. In fact, just this week I was watching a program on the Smithsonian Channel called "Aerial Connecticut" and the narrator pronounced it incorrectly for either venue -- a sort of hybrid pronunciation like "Tames." There were a couple of other place names that were not pronounced as the locals say them. One would think that a before recording the sound track for a documentary specifically about a particular geographical location, the producers would make an effort to see that all the proper names were correct.
Last week I recorded a VO for an oil refinery in Saudi Arabia and had to do a couple of pickups once the producer got back to me with a couple of corrected pronunciations. Since I pronounced them the same (incorrect) way on the demo, I'm not sure why they waited until I had done the "for real" recording to correct me, but at least they did. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Diane,
In North Carolina that's how they pronounce those storms that start in the warm ocean waters and get names when they get big enough. _________________ Be well,
