I didn't see this posted yet, and since it involves VO I thought I would pass along the news. I hesitate to do so because, quite frankly, his comments make me sick. Alas, here it is...

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/news/2011/03/14/gilbert-gottfried-canned-as-aflac-duck.html

A friend just sent me the link and I'm assuming it's legit.

That's pretty insensitive. Do people think that their tweets don't count? That what they say on soc media doesn't follow them?

I never thought of him as a comedian, this just confirms it!

Everyone: please contribute to the tsunami and earthquake relief efforts! There are many great charities out there: International Red Cross, Mercy Corps, etc. They need all the help they can get!

I do not condone Gottfried's comments but I just as quickly have to point out - hey Aflac - if you hire the often tasteless comedian Gilbert Gottfried to do your spots - you're dancing with the devil and you darn well better NOT be surprised or indignant when he burns you.

If PBS gets all uppity now too about this and drops the cartoon Gottfried's voice is featured in - I'd say the same thing - and my kids watch that cartoon.

Politically, with 75% of the company's biz in Japan, I'm not surprised they'd drop him - they have to.

But you KNEW who you were getting when you hired him and it wasn't just a voice, Aflac. It's OK to make the decision, but don't stand on any podium following the termination with anything like moral superiority.

And I just know they're going to position it that way, somehow.

Did anyone besides me find it odd that his comments were included in the article? Why not simply state he was let go after posting some comments following the quake that were deemed inappropriate and insensitive by AFLAC?

For the life of me, I don't understand why they included the jokes.

Scott,

It's called "sensationalism" and it's an unfortunate fact of life in what passes for mass media journalism these days.

Gilbert: "Is this stool taken?"

Charlie Sheen: "Oh hey Gilbert, what took you so long?"

Rob FTW- I was thinking the same thing- he ripped a page out of the Charlie Sheen, American Cult of personality "attention is more important than mental health, family or being a human being" book.

it's apparent social media have made many people, famous or not, look like dolts.

A classic case of a voice thinking they are bigger than the client.

A friend of mine just lost a major account because he mentioned on twitter and facebook that he was the voice of a product prior to the spot being sent to air. They recast and went on their way.

It baffles me that talent can't remember that they are just part of the wheel. The real stars are the people that write and direct and for that matter the product. The talent is just the paint in the scene.

Not VO, but we know someone who has posted some pretty godawful things publicly on FB and is now surprised that the people who have been hurt by these postings are not happy with it. People just do not think sometimes.

What is up with the media these days, publishing this crap? I mean, maybe he'd explain it in a Playboy interview in a year or two, but what's up with the mainstream media making it worse?
