Hello. I'm looking to upgrade my home studio, and I'm starting with the mic. I'm an alto female, and most of my work is commercial, narration, promo, cd-rom & animation.

I've received a few suggestions, and would greatly appreciate any thoughts/feedback/additional suggestions you may have.

Oh, and I'm looking at under $1000.

Here's what I'm looking at thus far:
Neumann TLM 102
Rode NTK
Studio Projects C1
Shure SM27
Sennheiser MKH 416

I also have been offered an
Audio Technica 3035

Appreciate thoughts, advice, etc...!

Hey Dana, Welcome to the circus! z Laugh
I think your voice is well suited for that Senn 416. If you want a deal look for a 415 like I use that is the precursor to the 416. Pretty much the same mic. There are usually a few on ebay, where I got mine, for anywhere around $575 to $750. A pretty good deal. I have the T type with a P48 converter. The converters are easy to come by and inexpensive.

Most of the 415 sellers on ebay are pretty good. Even the ones in Europe that sell this mic are reputable and fast shipping.

Hope that helps you a little.

Hi Dana,

I have the Neumann TLM 103 and I absolutely love it. It's a little more than $1000 but barely.
I'm in Burbank, you're welcome to pop in and try it if you want.

Let's hear what you sound like now, with the set up you have.

Agree with Mike.

The 416 can work very well with some female voices, in some rooms, with the right pre and - most importantly - the right postioning. The TLM 103 might work but is very bright in the sibilance band, so it won't suit every female voice out there.

Post what you got right now....

For female voice I like the Electro Voice RE-20 and the Neumann TLM-193.
My wife uses these and they work great for the TV commercial work she does. Both are very flattering mics in the areas where a female voice might have some sharp peaks.

With your budget, don't bother with any of the under $600 condenser mics.

While I like the 416 for me and many male VOs, it's pretty aggressive for most females.

Posting voice sample could help us help you narrow your choices.

Thank you for your helpful input, suggestions, etc!
I appreciate the time you've all taken to respond!

As it turns out, I'm bringing in a sound/mic consultant to see the space I'm working in. See what we can do to improve that, then see what mic will best serve me in said space. Ta da!
