Demolished: 1903 house catty-corner behind mine.

Replacement: Dunno, but it must have a 7-story basement. The grader starts at 7 am and there's a line of idling dumptrucks waiting to take the dirt away.
Soon to be followed by several months of construction.

New recording hours: 4PM to 6:30 AM.

If it's anything like the ones next door and across the street from our house, it'll be a gigantic box built to within 3 feet of the property line on 2 sides! Sticking out Tongue

It's bad enough to listen to even when you aren't trying to record. My sympathies, Donna!!

I hope they don't deploy helicopters to continue the work after dark!

That seems to be the modus operandi around here— trucks in the day, helicopters at night.
WTF.

Donna, if it gets too bothersome, I would be happy to connect via isdn and help you do some gain structuring to see if we can lessen the noise.

Another thing you may want to do is walk a 12 pack over towards the end of their work day. Explain to them what you do, and that sessions last less than an hour normally. When you have a session, walk over and ask if they mind taking a bit of a break. Nine times out of ten they are looking for a reason to take a few minutes off and they will comply.

Just a thought, it worked for me when the power company was parked in front of my place with the chipper going during a big tree thinning for hurricane season.

If they act like dorks, you could always sugar the tanks at night!

Not long ago, while I was attempting to record, I was treated to the sound of these guys (there were 3 or 4 of them in all) circling the neighborhood. Every time I thought they had finally flown off, they came back around -- for at least half an hour.

Zak, thanks for the offer, and the great idea! Never underestimate the power of homemade cookies. Or a six pack.
It wasn't too bad today. I find I can deal with a more or less constant rumble pretty easily, and there isn't a lot of percussive noise being produced yet. And no helicopters! Egad, that's a nightmare!

Helicopter, Osprey', transports and fighter jets -- we are just outside the incoming flight path for MCAS Miramar. When it was a Navy air field it was better. The hot shot marines don't stick the flight path. We are between 10 and 5 miles out from the runway. They take short cuts and hit the afterburners nearly overhead. It is especially nice when a number of them fly in from training at Yuma at two am when we are trying to sleep.

Between the scream of the jet engines (fighters abd helos are usually flying in formation) and the vibration from the helos, recording can have its interruptions and challenges. I need to consider a room isolated within a room.

Donna, your noise is temporary. The Marine air base is here to stay. If they do leave the powers at be would like to relocate the commercial airport there. That would be even more constant noise.

Shortly before I decided to pursue voiceover, I moved to a new apartment -- directly across the street from a firehouse. I loved the place, so I stayed and eventually set up a home studio. The noise from the firehouse was occasionally disruptive but usually mercifully short. Those guys moved fast.

A couple of years ago, the city built a new firehouse about a mile away and shut down the one across the street. The building was vacant for a while, and the silence was wonderful. But the city sold the building, and last summer the new owner started a major, and noisy, rehab of the place that lasted for months. I had just begun a huge audiobook project, and the noise forced me to have to do all of the recording at night.

The major outdoor construction work is done now, so the neighborhood is quiet again.

The ironic silver lining? My new neighbor is a production house.

And the O. Henry ending? I'm planning to move out this summer.

As we live up in the mountains, far away from everything, it's usually pretty quiet up here. However, during the "good weather months" there is the chance to hear (long before you see them) choppers doing rescues of lost/injured hikers, or search-and-rescue. Last September, our skies were buzzing with airplanes, choppers and the occasional slurry bomber during the huge fire north of us. Sometimes they'd do their turns right over the house. They don't usually fly at night, so those were times I'd do whatever VO I needed to do.

Many years ago I had a client who bought a beautiful Victorian house and decided to put his recording studio in the 3rd floor attic space. Being an ornate 100-year-old house, there was no central air conditioning nor any easy way to install it, so on really hot days we had no choice but to open the windows for some ventilation.

Unfortunately, there were two problems with this. One was that his house was directly beneath the flight path for Runway 6 at nearby Bradley International Airport (only about 3 miles away) so there were always low flying jets overhead whenever that runway was in use. The other problem was the town in which the house was located was also the home of Ensign Bickford Industries, a manufacturer of explosives, and their testing facilities were scattered throughout the vicinity, so our recording sessions were frequently punctuated by the sound of bombs going off.
