|
|
One-step forward, two steps back...
I had a tough coaching session (the coaching was great; me: Not so much). While I know I'm improving, growing, learning and breaking old bad habits, it can be alternately exhilarating and discouraging. And while it only motivates me to work harder, it always helps to get perspective when you're being hard on yourself (read: ego gets i the way). A friend gave me a good pep talk that, in summary was something like this:
'This is all part of the process of making that new muscle/creating that new fold in the brain/permanently etching a new technique into your nervous system. And you can’t help but doubt your progress b/c your head actor self is fighting against the new things that you’re learning. We've all been there, and even if you logically know it’s all a part of the learning process, it still ain't always fun...'
Onward and forward. Happy weekend all! _________________ Perry Anne Norton VO

I spotted a cartoon at the studio I've been taking a class at. It summed up "The Four Stages of Competence" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_stages_of_competence) in a very amusing way.
Moving from conscious incompetence to conscious competence is a huge step and is not easy, in my estimation. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

WOW. I adore you all! Thanks for the serious and humorous responses (if you can't laugh...)
I think I may use "Moving from conscious incompetence to conscious competence" as my tagline! _________________ Perry Anne Norton VO

Today I worked with a producer I've know for about 20 years and this thread reminded me of a comment he made during a session some time ago.
"You sound much better when you're not TRYING to be a voice over"
You simply wouldn't believe the amount of money I spent on coaching to get that right! |

Wonderful comments, all. Thanks, Perry, for kicking off this great discussion.
I'm also struggling as I try to get into the groove for a specific type of spot that's a significant shift away from my signature sound. The friend who wants to hire me thinks I can do it. Part of me thinks I can do it, too, but after numerous failed attempts, there's a growing part of me feels it's a lost cause because of the very fact that it's so different from what I do best. I really want to make it work, but it's becoming very frustrating.

Melanie and Justin and all--
I'm heartened by, and empathetic to your comments.
As for working out of your signature sound /comfort zone - that's a tough one; part of me wants to say that YOU are YOU and not another "sound"' ; on the other hand it's also (as Richard Horwitz likes to say) about "playing pretend". Sometimes it's as much about practicing who you are NOT as it is about knowing who you ARE. Does that make sense?
Off to Napa! I'll mull it all over with vino and good food and toast each of you in my travels...
