I saw this news story online today:
Quote: | GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (A — A filmmaker was taking the blame after New York police officers were summoned to what they thought was an armed robbery, but turned out to be a location shoot for his upcoming movie.
The confrontation ended peacefully when officers ordered an actor playing a gunman to drop his weapon.
"I made the mistake," Fred Carpenter told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "I was supposed to tell the local police precinct what we were doing."
Carpenter was filming inside convenience store in Bellmore, on Long Island, on Tuesday morning in a scene in which a gunman takes a number of people hostage. A passer-by apparently thought it was the real thing and called police.
"All of a sudden I'm directing and 15 police officers come in," Carpenter said. "And for a moment I'm thinking it's part of the movie and then I said, wait a minute, I wrote the movie and this wasn't in the film. And it was like, insanity."
Nobody was injured, but police said the outcome could have been tragic.

Reminds me of the time about 20 years ago when we were running the show Guv: The Musical in our theater in Tempe. It was a rollicking satire of the political foibles our state had been going through with its Governors for almost 130 years to that time. We were lucky enough to have our new sitting Governor decide to attend.
This was before his scandals broke. Just months later we were skewering him along with all the others.
Two days before the performance his security detail paid us a visit to check out the whole building, including the bathrooms (I understand people in their position always closely inspect the bathrooms). Everything suited them fine...we reserved seats for the Governor's party plus a few agents to be scattered about the house. We're wrapping up and just as they turned to leave, the director of the show says, "Hey, you don't suppose we should tell them about the gun, do you?" Three burly men in suits suddenly turned back with intense interest. "Oh yes, there's a scene where my character fires a pistol twice down the vomitorium* in the center of the seating (just a few degrees off from where the Governor would be sitting). I'll bet you'd like to see the gun and be assured that we use blanks, huh?" My actions in the show were based on lore about a wild and notorious Republican Congressman of ours who shot his neighbor's donkeys and there was a veiled reference to Democrats in there somewhere. After a thorough review they gave their blessing, but shook their heads heavily as they left.
If we hadn't said anything I think I could have become a VO no mo.

Great story, Bruce. Glad you folks decided to let the Governor's security detail in on your plans.
But as far as that incident on Long Island, NY, it's outrageous that the filmmaker would be so absent-minded and/or irresponsible. For decades already, there have been stories of children being shot by police because they were holding a toy gun or other weapon, or something resembling one and didn't drop it when ordered to do so. Same for some seemingly innocent adults. One of the more shocking of those stories was the 1999 New York City incident where Amadou Diallo was shot 41 times (and killed) by four plainclothes NYC cops who thought he had a gun... but it was a wallet.
This filmmaker was shooting - of all places - in a convenience store, probably the location of more armed robberies than anywhere else. And besides the security cameras inside these stores, more and more locations such as this - especially the ones in places like New York City (Garden City is only minutes away from Manhattan) - are being monitored on the outside by security cameras tied to the police departments.
We all know this. And this filmmaker didn't consider it? I wouldn't be a bit surprised if he knew and was secretly hoping for a little realistic action. I'm not suggesting he was looking for anyone to get shot for real, but he certainly wasn't looking out for anyone's safety, either. _________________ Mike
