Anybody take a look at this yet? The folks claim it can be used for submitting VO auditions, but aside from this specific aHobo Tounge, I'm curious to hear thoughts about using a device like the iPhone for recording auditions.

I've always received the impression that auditions should be recorded on quality equipment to let the potential client hear the audio quality that we can deliver. If I were to use my iPhone, would the potential client "get" that the performance of my audition is more important than the audio quality, and that they should look to my produced demo for an example of the latter? Would I need to explicitly make that point? Is it too much to expect a client to overlook the audio quality in that situation? For those of you who cast projects, have you ever received an audition that was recorded on cheap gear, but the delivery was so stellar that you decided to hire the talent anyway?

This is very interesting. I downloaded the iPad version and am hard-pressed to see it as anything other than a subscription pdf viewer. I'm a little reluctant to sign up for their on-line service to test it properly. I can see it working for a team where sides will be posted to a central place that needs to be accessed by a large cast and crew, but for individuals? Just email me, or send me the link to the doc (pdf or whatever) and I'll use a viewer on the iPad. Mind you, it's version 1 and it may get better... it's quite nice eye-candy as well, but until I can easily import my own docs, I see it as a limited (crippled) tool.

Of course, I could be completely wrong, and if I spend more than two minutes looking at it I may find that out Wink

EDIT: I just checked their pricing... $1.99 per script or $19.99 per month as a subscription... or you can save a bundle by paying $199 a year!

I think not.

Unless you know them and they know you, there is little assurance potential clients will "get" anything.

In the cities, they're going to record you in a pro studio anyway, so the acting is what counts. I think you stand a better chance of having a client HEAR your acting if it's recorded on great gear in the first place— but an iPhone in your car. . . .? Maybe it's good enough,

Bingo.

I was on the hiring end a few weeks ago and so many of the talent had bad recordings with noise and hiss, that I couldn't trust that the actual product would be any kind of quality. I wouldn't risk losing a gig simply for the convenience of being able to record on a Newton - er, iPad.

Trained professionals might be able to hear the acting over the dog barking or the echo of a bad room, but clients I think would be rather distracted by a bad recording. Any time I hear less than studio quality on a demo or an audition I perceive not ready for prime time...I realize this is not always fair, however, why risk it?

On the other hand, there are rock bands now recording an entire CD on an i-Phone and immediately uploading to a site for purchase and download and it is working...so what do I know.
