There is a potential client who wants me to record and send over audition files for a job, but she hasn't told me what the fee will be for the job. SHe said that she needs to first listen to all the auditions first before announcing what the fee will be, because she first needs to determine how much work to give to each talent. How usual is this? |

Very unusual and very low rent. As a general rule one should never audition for a job paying less than you consider at least a weeks pay. If she won't say how much you either tell her how much or ask how little it COULD be then decide. If she's faffing about at the audition stage god help you if you get the job. |

I certainly agree with almost everything Philip said, except this part:
Quote: | As a general rule one should never audition for a job paying less than you consider at least a weeks pay |
Philip's situation is not like most of ours, in that he is earning a huge amount of money doing this, while rarely auditioning. Nice work, as they say, if you can get it.
But here in NYC, even the big players are auditioning for almost every job, and I can tell you that a good number of these gigs are not big paydays. What works for Philip, when it comes to auditioning, may not work for everyone---or really, for most. |

That's a BS answer. What she's really trying to decide is how much she thinks the talent is worth by listening to the auditions. Circumvent this by performing the audition and stating your rate for the job. _________________ Jeff

Depends on how you define BS.

Why should you take the time and trouble to record and audition for someone, if you don't even know if you want the job or not? That doesn't even begin to make sense to me.
I'm not in PB's world. I record a quick audition for anything that falls within the realm of an acceptable rate. It doesn't take me long, and these kinds of things sometimes turn into long-term relationships where they send me over scripts and money and stuff without any further auditioning.
But sweet Lebanon balogna! Asking what the job pays before you "apply" is hardly unreasonable. _________________ the Amy Snively family of brands for all your branded thing needs.

If you do decide to audition and get cast make sure to write up a contract with the fee she has quoted you. Best of luck. |

How about this? Do the audition, send it in, and if you are offered the job for less than you think it's worth, turn it down. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

If you've got the time go ahead and audition (and then learn what their true intentions are for learning's sake), but as a rule blind auditions with no description of the scope or pay for the job are a wasted effort....(as inferred above, the client is probably a nut case to work for).

You can always direct them to an online demo and if they like it.... ask the question. |

Thanks everyone for your input on this matter. What the client is asking for sounded a bit sketchy to me, but I wanted some second opinions. And now she's asking for something even more sketchy: she's asking for re-reads of my audition files. I'm going to actually call her up and talk to her and voice my concerns tomorrow. I've never experienced this sort of thing before. |

It's already gone into the realm of too much work unless its paying zillions.
Philip Banks has an apt analogy using the cattle-call process of auditioning the role of Harry Potter. it's worth the fuss and call backs if it's a job like that. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Isn't that what the actual job is for? _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!
