I will be moving my blog from Old Blogger to WordPress sometime in the next few weeks, since Blogger is telling me that because my site is published via ftp I must migrate it to a new custom domain URL or a blogspot URL. I'm thinking if I have to go to all that trouble I might as well get all my stuff completely to my own site. Does anybody who has done this have any words of wisdom (other than, back everything up first!). The blog is published via ftp from my own site, so it's basically already there at www.marymckitrick.com/blog/blog.htm. I don't know if that makes things easier or not. But, I'm scared of losing stuff. My site is hosted by Bluehost, which is one of WordPress' recommended hosts. I've also got The New Ultimate Guide to Migrating from Blogger to WordPress at hand. Other than that, is there anything I should be watching out for? Stuff I've read elsewhere suggests it is "painless" but the vo-bb archives indicate that might not be true. And, I haven't found anything that specifically pertains to moving blogs whose files are already stored on one's server.

Rejoicing in advance for your advice...

Mary,

One of the keys to living happily with Wordpress is to be sure your hosts server is running Linux rather than a flavor of Windows. Also, I'm not sure that you can continue to update your blog via FTP once you've switched to Wordpress, but if you use Firefox as your browser, there is a wonderful plug-in called ScribeFire that can make updating your blog very simple. I use it every day.

Thanks Bob - my host's servers are indeed running Linux. So far so good.

One of these days I will just have to jump...

Bob turned me on to ScribeFire. It's awesome!

For what it's worth I love wordpress. Very easy to use and there's lots of help on the net. I access it from 3 computers all the time and I even have an aHobo Tounge on my iphone so I can update posts or moderate comments on the go.

Sorry I can't help with migration since I've never used Blogger but I wanted to let you know I'm a very happy WP user.

I've never liked WordPress...but it's made me a believer because of the community that surrounds it, the respect it gets from Google, and all the 3rd-party plug-ins that are available. But I had to be dragged kicking and screaming to it's doorstep.

ScirbFire is top-notch, but so is MS LiveWriter. I actually use the WordPress dashboard a lot....but NOT IN CHROME...it gets the formatting all screwed-up.

I enjoy working with WordPress as well. Am very satisfied with them.

AND, thanks for the warning about CHROME, Dave!

The actual move was relatively painless.

I'm not entirely sure of the repercussions though: I had to move my Blogger blog to a blogspot address before I could import it into WordPress. Now the blogspot address happily redirects to the new url, but the old url is still out there as are all the files. This will probably come back to bite me in many ways.

The old url: http://www.mcmvoices.com/blog/blog.htm

The new url: http://www.marymckitrick.com/blog

I didn't realise when I changed my domain from mcmvoices to marymckitrick just what a pain it would be in the long run.

Anyway, if you have a link to my old blog on your blog, it would be grand if you could change it. And if you have it feedburned, the new feed is http://feeds.feedburner.com/marymckitrick/UwFf

Thank-you! On another day, after my brain is functioning again, I will add a blog roll.

Sigh. Life is not simple Smile

EDITED TO ADD: scratch that about the move being relatively painless - I just discovered that all the archived pages seem to be missing. Just shoot me.
