Found a link to This on a translation forum (yes there IS another forum) I frequent. It's about translation but it translates perfectly to our business.
And by the tone it must have been written by Banksey's bilingual cousin - though without that certain je ne sais quois |

That was interesting. Rick Canada wrote something for ExtraVox explaining how "we" lose elearning jobs. It was sh*te! In effect he was saying that the market dictates that you're only selling your time and labour so you must let the market decide.
How much do I charge per word? The same as Da Vinci charged per brush stroke! How much do I charge per page? The same as J.K Rowling. How much do I charge per finished minute? The same as Tom Cruise. How much for a 60 second commercial? Look you're paying for a whole hour of my time do you want me to come around and mow your lawn to use up the extra time.

Interesting to see the similarities between what voice overists are up against as compared with translationists. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Good article. The section about clients taking a long time to pay hit home with me. One job I did promptly and the client said he was happy with didn't pay for 60 days. I contacted the production co. this client booked through and I was told that "This is a good client who always takes a long time to pay but he's good for it."
The way I saw it was that this client was keeping my $2,500. in his bank account and getting my interest. |
