Thanks Edo....

I just got an e-mail from DigiDesign support telling me essentially the same thing, and yet they require that ILok authorization for Pro-Tools to run!... in fact, all along they've been INSISTING that I make sure to check I've got the latest PACE software installed.

Hey, I'm just impressed that these DigiDesign tech support guys are on the job, and communicating with customers on the weekend!

More later!

He warns about deleting the file....what about renaming it?

Just a thought.

Heading home from the newscast. Tonite, I attack TPkd.sys in earnest.

First, uninstall or otherwise delete all record of it.
Reboot
Then, install the latest PACE (TPkd.sys) files.
Reboot
Then...pray as I double-click on the Pro-Tools logo.

What a scam....you can't start Pro-Tools without the PACE anti-piracy authorization....but -- according to some -- that's the very file that may carry a virus or other bug.

Hate That!

If that fails, I'm gonna throw up my hands, and just delete my old (failed) user profile, and migrate everything to the Pro-Tools-working user profile...checking along the way that PT still works with every new install.

Sheesh...!!!

Dave,

Usually when there's a warning about viruses in a file like tpkd.sys, that means that a malicious piece of code is disguised as that file, and not that the original from the manufacturer could contain a virus.

In other words, the virus writer chooses a file which a certain target audience might be known to have on their system and replaces the original with their malicious version so that their file is harder to find.

So how'd it go?

Lou,

I had the happy predicament of being too busy with VO jobs to have trouble-shot this last night.

As it was, I got to bed at 4:08a.... of course some of that late hour was taken up trying to help my daughter with her Geometry (Two triangles are SIMILAR if the altitude of one triangle....yada yada yada).

I've just rec'd new info from Digidesign and a phone call from Frank's contact at DigiDesign...so good stuff to go... thanks for following-up!

More later.

Hey Dave,

Yesterday, I had a bit of trouble upgrading my PT to 7.4. The first problem I had to overcome was installing WinXP SP2. The next; during the installation of PT it froze. I couldn't uninstall it to re-install it. So, I had to call for assistance. (This stuff really doesn't matter to you.) But! (This part does matter) the tech at Digidesign said the best thing I could do to safely run PT was to create a separate user profile to run PT on ONLY. Nothing else. No internet. No family pics. NADA. Only XP and PT. Then create a shared document folder to transfer files to the other profile. For total optimization, we should use a separate hard drive, too. Internal or external doesn't matter. The reason is so PT doesn't conflict with any other software you might be running in the background, such as firewalls or anti-virus programs.

Best of luck,

Dan

I'd like to point out that all of this comes down to bad, sloppy software design.

I'm just saying.

Well, in the example I listed, I guess "conflict" was the wrong word. Anti-virus and firewall programs are always chugging along in the background taking up memory and making sure the new file you are creating are not dangerous. It was just a way to make sure you are fully optimized to get the cleanest sound possible and avoid any technical glitches.

Right, but my point is that correctly-written software shouldn't have those issues. Conflicts are generally caused by a developer "not following the rules" of whatever OS (s)he's developing for, hacking a little bit here or there to save time, resources, do something tricky, etc.

Performance is a different issue...but to say that you have to run a piece of software on a "clean" install JUST so that it won't crash is the developer admitting that they've written really, really bad software.

Dan-O.... you're getting closer and closer to the final solution I'm approaching too...

Right now, I'm using a separate user profile strictly for my PT 7.4cs2, whilst I toil away on the ORIGINAL (and apparently faulted) user profile to find the conflicting culprit.

Yes, this is getting old, but I refuse to give up.
