OH MY HEAD DB! Gasp
Looking at that picture I had an out of body experience and a trip through the time space continuim back to a time long ago and a galaxy far far away.

That consule was identical to the one I first played on in college radio, and on in the production studio of WPRO in Providence.... a time where huge headphones were called "CANS", a great voice talent had "GOOD PIPEs" and you could ask someone to "Turn the Pot Down" and they knew what you meant. Wow. Okay, Sherman, set the way back machine back to 2007, time to go back to the present Laugh

This is the kind of thing KKUA radio (Honolulu) had in the early 70's.
I was a Teenage Gopher, in the days before "interns".

Smoke-a-rama there, too.

Something caught my attention in the WFIF picture. The VU's aren't "peggin'."
(Maybe they were on their way up when the pic was snapped?)

They must be showing air signal, post-limiter.

I remember on one occasion coming in before my shift and chatting with the mid-day guy, and hearing this annoying little clicking sound. It was driving me crazy and I couldn't figure out what it was. And (in the words of Lloyd Bridges/Mike Nelson) "then I saw it". It was the VU meters on the console hitting hard enough that I was surprised they didn't break off. I mentioned it to the guy and he said something to the effect of "Ah, it's okay, the limiter will take of everything."

And speaking of smoking, getting into radio was when I started smoking. I think there are still burn marks on one of the windowsills in one of the stations I was at. Thankfully, that's one habit I finally broke many years later.

The production rooms we had in college had similarly-styled boards... Pots as big as moon pies. That was 1987, too...

God, those consoles look familiar. Brings back some strange memories. As I recall, the monitor pot went all the way to 11!

Geez Mary, an Autogram board! I remember those. I worked on one in the mid 80's as well Smile

AND Bill, I know where there is a Gates console almost just like the one in the pics on that website. It's sitting in the transmitter room of the radio station I work for occassionally Wink Doesn't look quite that nice though. There's also an old Collins board in there along with lots of other old stuff. Unfortunately, the RCA 77DX mic that was there is missing. Someone either threw it out OR has it in their possession. I have asked everyone about it but no one seems to know where it went.

I started when (1968) we played 45's and 33's. Slip-cued. Only jingles and spots were on carts. Casey Casem's American Top 40 came on a 33 rpm album.

Anyone remember Hobo Laughing's speeding up the turn tables to get a different sound than the competition and to get more music in an hour? 45's played at 47.5?

How about taking transmitter meter readings and actually having to take an FCC 3rd class exam (on such things as tower lighting, and antenna icing)?? When I went into the City to take my first FCC exam, it was cancelled because Chicago’s loop was sealed off by the National Guard because of rioting in the aftermath of Bobby Kennedy's assassination.

K.I.M.N. in Denver was one of the stations that sped up the turntables. I still remember reading an article about that in Billboard Magazine about a hunnert and forty years ago.

I remember a couple of stations I worked at that used old TV audio boards. They had about four times as many pots and keys and other gizmos as we would ever need. The boards got warm enough that you could actually heat a sandwich - or remove the warp from an LP by placing it on top with several other albums piled on for weight, leave it there for an hour or so and then check it. Talk about yer stack o' hot wax.....

One station I worked at had what was brand new and a hot setup at the time - the board was called "Dualux" if I remember correctly and I believe it was made by Gates. We could take any pot and switch it's function to something else. Sometimes we would key the mic at the extreme left end and use the next two pots for the turntables and so on down the line. Other times we might swap everything around, just for kicks -- It was always fun to switch everything just before the next guy took over.....well, it was a lot nicer than setting his ad copy on fire while he was reading the ad for the Brimstone Crematoreum and Sandwich Shop.

That is still a standard practice at many stations and companies. The CD players in the nineties had a 2% speed increase switch on the back. And, if what I have heard is true, Clear Channel speeds up 2% on every music station they own using their Prophet automation system.

DB - I started on that board as well - but it was a bit larger - 16 pots (I think) you had to have the wingspan of a condor to reach the mic pot (far left) and the RTR pot (far right). Remember the roll paper from the AP/UPI wire? Rip & Read national news? I remember tearing the paper off the printer and dragging a trail 15 feet long through the studio - while the news intro was running - trying to find ... whatever it was I was looking for, then scrolling through while I was reading like some ancient Roman. And God help the jock who didn't let the paper run ALL THE WAY out before changing the roll. Oh yeah - the alarm for weather - breaking news - whatever ding ding ding.
