Well, I went out and ordered the Tung-Sol 12AX7 standard tube but will try the gold pin later on since I heard the gold pin doesn't have as much gain as the standard tube. I'll get both of them and see. I was also looking at the JJ Tesla's but not really sure if it really the tesla it is the new stock and found one for less than $10. The Tung-Sol I got was less than $18 including shipping. |

The new production Sensor 'Tung Sol' is a good match for both the MPA and the v67g. Don't bother with the gold pin version. I have both and use the regular one - hotter output and the same sound. The JJ you found is probably the new production as well. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Hey Lance, I just put in that Tung-Sol and it sounds ok. I was just wondering about how long these tubes take to burn in? or do they not have to burn in. |

There really is no "Burn In" time with tubs like there is with capacitors, particularly oiled filled caps where the sound will improve. But what is considers burn in with tubes is really just finding out if there are any dudes or failures, this is usually takes 8 to 12 hours with a typical load. When you plug in a tube that's generally as good as it's going to sound.
So if you're not liking the sound of a particular tube it's time to move onto the next tube. |

Thanks Mike for the input I will try something else in the future. The stock chinese tube actually sounded better had better gain range than the Tung-Sol which started to give me feedback when I put in some gain in the analog output. I did buy some new cables and that could be the problem. I will do some more tests to find out. It's a big day here today for everyone in Arizona. Go Cardinals! |

Sorry the Tung Sol didn't work out for you. My JJ just went microphonic today after less than a year. It's NOS or nothing for now. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

When I was researching the tubes I came across that term microphonics, which came up a few different times but without explanation.
What do you mean when your tube goes microphonic on you? |

This explains it a bit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microphonics
The tube is sensitive to vibrations and thus becomes a sort of microphone in itself. If you tap the top of the MPA gold and hear a pinging noise through the signal very clearly, you've got a dud. When it's really bad, you get straight up feedback, as yours is doing. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

Well that is a bummer. I will send it back and get a new one to replace it. I got it on Ebay, I have 30 days to return it but have to pay the shipping of course. |

When I was researching for tubes I came across a website for tubes that I thought was a good store. Anyways this guy comes into my work tonight with a T-shirt with a tube on it showing all the parts of the tube. So of course I asked him about the T-shirt and he tells me he works part time at a tube store so I deffinatley want to know where it is and he tells me the name of the place and it's right down the street from me. Well itjust so happens to be one of the sites I searched around for and put in my fav's. so here is the store site http://www.tubesandmore.com/ This place is right by my house niiiiiiiiiiiiice! I wish I knew this place was around a week ago but I will be supporting this local business in my neighborhood. |
