Tom, before you agonize over which expensive mic to buy and use, you might want to upgrade to a high end pre-amp before you decide on which mic.
While not BAD, the Onyx and Aphex pres aren't going to bring out the very best out of those mics.

Just my opinion, buy an AT4047 and use your Onyx pres. That combo and your talent will compete with anyone. Happy hunting.

perhaps I'll keep on with the insanity and consider a Pearlman TM-1 or Peluso 2247...

It can become a maddening decision....I just recently tried out several mics with Mercenary Audio----Branuer Phantera, Telefunken AK-47, Gefell M930--it was mentally and emotionally draining to say the least. At the same time I was trying out a Sennheiser 415 as an alternative to the 416.

Don't get me wrong, it was fun and I appreciate having the opportunity to do it, but with so much $$ riding on the ultimate decision, it can be a little overwhelming.

But be careful. This kind of thing can become all-consuming and a major distraction that gets in the way of other things like bringing in new business and concentrating on your performance.

When it becomes too much, take a deep breath and more than anything, trust your gut when all else fails.

Anyway, my 0.02, having just gone through what it sounds like you're going through, Tom...
