I've got a very clean, solidstate signal path right now...TLM103 into the Grace 101. Very sterile so am looking for a contrast. Something with color and character.

The UA 710 has me intrigued....

Gotcha.
In technical terms, they say that "color" equals low frequency distortion. (Best ask folks like KG, Soundgun and others here.) I understand that transformers are what's used most to create desired distortion.
Your demos do sound clean, and that's a desirable trait for most commercial work. Some preamps promote their switchable circuits to match the desired sound (ADK, Sebraton and others). Normally, a John Hardy would be the first suggestion, but it too is a "clean" sound.
Are you looking more for a "fuller" sound? I am. Maybe the Lawson Mic approach is the direction we should look. But Lawson tube or FET? Money Mouth
I can't wait to see what others say. I feel an article on VoiceoverXtra.com coming.

Because it's the title of the thread...

you can do just as much with preamps that aren't based on a tube circuit.

My go-to preamp using a traditional approach to transformer-based preamps (the preamp is anything but traditional, but the design from whence it originated is very GR in approach).

"Color" is a term used for any kind of musically pleasing distortion. It can be used LF, mids, or HF. Depending on how much juice you give the transformer, this coloration can be changed or nearly eliminated in some cases.
