Or backwards.
Although I must admit, out of order and backwards worked for The Beatles pretty well. |

How to feel old really quick: Ask your new part-timer, who is fresh out of broadcasting school, to thread up a reel. Then witness the blank look on their face.
True story. He had no idea what I was talking about.
I am on the younger end of this discussion, but I caught the tail end of splicing, cueing-up records and recording on 4-track analog tape. Loved every second of it. |

I had a radio jock give me the deer in the headlights look just last week when I gabbed a bit about the joy of carts. Man, oh man...
On goofy nights we used to have contests to see who could eat a potato chip closest to back on mic moment. I always beat the guy with the mustache! _________________ Blue skies -- Lauren Lee

Well, if you insist.
Don't have any experience in radio. About 10 years ago when I was managing an IT Help Desk at a television network (to keep it a bit on topic), we hired a high school student as a summer intern. Our inventory tags were metal and we asked him to prepare some for new computers. The look of consternation and confusion on his face when we pulled out a small, portable typewriter (the only thing that could make a proper indentation on the metal) was priceless. He had never seen a typewriter before. _________________ Elaine

Only when I worked at a small AM station outside of San Antonio. All we had was two cart machines, a cassette deck, a CHEAP home turntable and an old tube two track reel machine. Any production that required more than a dry voice was like playing vertical Twister...
Right index finger... cart machine 1 set to record
right foot (no joke)... reel tape (with another DJ's lines recorded)
left index finger... cassette (music bed)
mic open, but potted down and ready...
Deep breath ANNND.... GO! *clack* *click*
THOSE were the days, by gumm... _________________ Greg Littlefield

I have two pair of Pro4AA and one pair of Pro4AAA. Still have 'em...still use em. I kept one for on the air and a spare in the desk. They had to be loud. As Alan Freed said, "They know when you're not listening."
Did you ever pass out "walking up" Richie Havens "Here Comes The Sun?"
....would you believe the "Theme From Shaft?"

Clevite headphones!
Yah - that's the ones. It's funny you should bring that up - for some odd reason I was thinking about them just a day or so ago. I remember there were black rubber cups around the ear piece, and when I took 'em off my head and let 'em hang loosely around my neck, the old dried out rubber would end up leaving a black mark on my shirts. My wife used to get a bit irritated about that. |

Back when AM stood for "Ample Money" and FM stood for... well, never mind. Anyway, the station's headphones constantly crapped out because they were so cheap. So I went to the chief engineer and we built a pair of really sturdy headphones. They started out as a pair of Sony headphones, we added heavy duty strain-relief on the 'phones and the plug and used heavy gauge cable. He once worked for the phone company (there was only one at that time) so he rigged the cable connections with the same hardware telco used on pay phones. Then, for a bit of panache, we added Mickey Mouse ears to them. They were surprisingly comfortable and never, ever broke. They could have survived a direct nuclear strike. They disappeared the same day one of the jocks was fired, which wasn't me for a change. |

Who else used a console with the rotary pots that were about the size of the bottom of a coffee mug? _________________ DBCooperVO.com
