Yeah, the thread is old, but sibilance issues never sssssseem to go away.
I used to own a Rode NT-1A, and I liked it but it was too bright for me. I didn't have sibilance issues with it, but I can see how many voices (especially female voices could). I have a Audio-Technica 4040, and while it has a big boost at 7K and 10K it doesn't bring in sibilance as much as it does "mouth noises" and breathiness. I would definitely recommend it as a under $500 mic especially for female talent. It's very rich in the 250-750Hz range. I'll use the AT4040 over some of my more expensive mics for the right situation.
For De-Essers, hardware gear tends to make the problem worse by turning the harsh high ess into an annoying lower lispy sound unless it's oustanding gear. I use the Spitfish VST plug-in from digitalfishphones.com which is free and very very good. It doesn't color the sound at all and it fixes the isssssssssssssssssssues. The only drawback is that it comes in a bundle with a crappy compressor and an okay expander/gate...oh, and it can cause minor delay/latency in your monitoring, so I never use it while actually recording...got to focus on getting it right in the first place without using the toolbox as a crutch. |
