What happens if you close Audition but have the Mic plugged in, headphone from M to board plugged in, and the PC soundcard plugged in to the board?

centrance has a "new" universal driver that helped my (completely unrelated) issues http://www.centrance.com/downloads/
silly question: why not just plug your headphones into the M?

If I plug the headphones directly into the M, I have no way of hearing system sounds, unless I route all the system audio through it as well. Back to the original problem of there being a conflict between ASIO4ALL and the Windows system driver.

ermmm, OK. Got the centrance driver going and it seems to distort and limit anything above -6db.
Why can't this crap ever just work?

you are not alone in that sentiment, friend. i can't begin to describe the anomalies i have with my (albeit workaround) setup, which includes m, soundcard, etc. sorry i'm no help but for moral support

A suggestion for troubleshooting:
Try moving the MicPort from a USB port on your machine to a port on a USB 2.0 hub connected to your machine. Apparently some systems have some known clocking issues that cause problems with the MicPort.
Worth a try, at least.

Worth a try. USB ports on the front of computers are usually hubs, right?

I meant an external hub, one that you daisy-chain into a hub on the PC. But moving it to a different port on your PC is worth a shot too.
In this case it's a long shot; I read on the CEntrance site that there's a problem with some PC USB chipsets and the clock signal, which is used by things like an audio interface- so you get pops and clicks as it can't sync correctly. One solution was to plug the thing into an external hub, which would have its own clocking to interface with devices connected to it.
You're not describing pops and clicks, but I thought it was worth trying if you have a hub laying about. I've got one I'll bring up on Saturday if you want to try it and don't have one. You can get them in any computer store fairly cheaply too.
However, some PCs use multiple USB hubs onboard, so moving it to another port is at least worth a try. You might also check the PC manufacturer's website to see if more recent mainboard, chipset or other low-level hardware drivers are available.
