It's only an inconvenience when you need to first turn the computer on, or if you need to insert a CD, but beats buying a new computer! |
Did you get kvm cables for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc? Or did you somehow use just one cable?
Thanks. |

Yes: a single cable that incorporates the keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections. You can get them in varying lengths. I found mine at a MicroCenter Warehouse store in the discount bin. Works great, and no fan noise! |

The sound proof box is always a great idea, just remember to have some type of ducting to allow for air to come in and go out of the box to keep the PC cool(er).
Today there are "silent" fans and other cooling devices which do not make (add) noise, such as a cooling radiator, available for computers. If you are not familiar with working on your computer's insides or have a new packaged computer - have a professional do the work for you. No sense violating the warrenty. Cost is around $59.99 USD to over $200.00 - it all depends on your pocketbook.
I use a "radiator" type and have zero noise from my box, and it sits beside me - just under the desk.

Sheesh...Zzounds.com is starting to get on my nerves. I ordered this:
http://www.zzounds.com/item--ALEMULTIMIX8USB
back in January and it has had a "More Expected" date of 2/24/05 on it since I placed my order. Today, I check and as you can see on their site...more are expected on 3/18/05. On the bright side, they haven't charged my card for it, yet. I guess this is just one popular piece of equipment.
'Course, I reckon it's not necessarily Zzounds fault that it's on backorder...just venting. Sorry. |

Check these folks out, Full Compass. I buy all my gear from them. I always call and talk to a rep. These guys really know their stuff. I betcha they'll meet or better the Zzounds price. They've always given me discounts.
Why wait for stuff on back order?

Thanks for the tip, Andy. I'll give them a call either this evening or tomorrow and see if they have it in stock. If they don't, it may be an issue with Alesis not having the proper amount of units for distribution...or something along those lines. We shall see.
Thanks, again! |

Well, just got off the phone with Full Compass. Looks like the problem is, indeed, with Alesis. They are backordered everywhere it looks like. But, thanks for the lead. |

Sorry about that. I was just on the phone with them, too. Was looking at a Behringer voice processor. But it's on backorder, too. Never had that problem with Full Compass before. |

I recently decided to stop using my Spirit Powerpad mixer and replace it, because it is a powered mixer and the fan started getting noisy.
Someone (Kevin?) recommended Alesis, so I decided as long as I was going shopping, I would check out the Alesis mixers while I was trying to decide between Peavey and Mackie and whatever else is out there.
The nice man at the store and I discussed the Peavey and the Mackie, but he told me they have had problems with Alesis - not quality problems with the products as much as difficulty with the company being a bit squirrely.
So...I ended up with a Yamaha. Never even thought about buying a Yamaha mixer. Nice mixer. Nice price. I got the MG10/2 for just under a hundred dollars. I'm well satisfied. |

Well, I just purchased an Mbox off of Ebay. Hopefully it will be worth the money. Paid $429 with shipping and all. I'll be on the lookout for a good deal on a 528E or something similar over the next few months. But, I figured the Mbox would get me started.
You Mbox users feel free to jump in here and let me know all the good things I can do with this thing. Any tips and tricks of the trade are appreciated.
BTW, do you folks recommend using XLR to XLR cable or XLR to 1/4"? (Yeah, I'm a newb to all this.) Thanks.
Edited to add: I don't think I've done too badly so far in keeping my expenses down. I think my total outlay so far is only at $611. I picked up a Studio Projects B1 Mic a few weeks ago for $99 which included the mic, shockmount, foam pop filter, carrying pouch, and free shipping. I picked up a mic cable for about $16. Got about 48 sq ft of 3" soundproofing foam and adhesive spray for around $67. And, now the Mbox for $429. |

Where'd ya get the foam. Since I am a carpenter, er, eh woodworker, been thinking about buiding my own audio booth. The $67 for foam seems pretty reasonable. |

I used a link posted earlier in this thread. I think it was this one:
http://stores.ebay.com/Foam-Factory-Inc_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQdptZ0QQftidZ2QQpZ4QQtZkm
However, in looking at it now, they don't seem to have the same thing out there that I got. They seem to have the 3" wedge foam (48 pk) but, it's more expensive. I got the 3" pyramid foam. But, maybe you can find something at that link which will fit what you want to do. |

Conditioned power and quality cabling make a huge difference in the signal. Some of the guys I work with spend most of their cash on the actual power cable itself (not me!). You'll need XLR cables for phantom power, better to go XLR all the way, avoid 1/4" unless you absolutely need it.

If you're building, a very good resource is Auralex's Acoustics 101. They have a lot of great information which will help you design your room, develop your list of items to purchase and build the room. Worth a look. Sound Suckers is another great resource for foam and other deadening materials for your studio, the people there are great. Last but not least is Markertek, which is pretty much the "last stop shop" for audio/visual equipment.
Hope some of this helps....
