Thanks, George and crew!
Another FYI... I ran the update on my MacBook only (left my recording Mac alone) and found that the OSX update caused the new Safari 4 Beta to crash repeatedly (read: every two or three minutes). For anyone who uses internet sites to submit online auditions, this may be a consideration. Reverting to Safari 3.2.1 eliminated the crashing issue. _________________ David Swinehart

I fix that problem by using Firefox instead of Safari, but that's just me |

Thanks for letting us know about that, David.
Key word: Beta. Never use Beta software for any mission critical use.
Firefox is my primary browser on Mac and Windows. I only use Safari to test my web pages to be sure it will load properly for users. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Just out of curiosity, are the issues that have been encountered with 10.5.7 specific to any model of Mac system?
I use Firefox for the most part, but I find that in every other up-break they put out there are issues with uploading audio files to certain web sites as is the case with the current Mac version but not the Windows version. Safari has yet to let me down in these occasions and I even keep a version of Netscape on hand just as 3rd option. |

I just went through the pains of upgrading to Tiger 10.4.11 to remedy some email and website issues that 10.3 Panther wouldn't work with. Now my Pro Tools 6.4 won't work.
I decided to uninstall Pro Tools and download a stand alone driver from Digidesign with thoughts of using Logic Express 8 that was given to me...I don't like it at all.
I then decided to buy Adobe Soundbooth, but found out it will not work with my Power Mac (Intel only)! CRAP!
I'm now looking into Twisted Wave, but I really want something with a noise reduction feature. I'm seriously thinking going back to PC for my business.
Does anyone have a magic wand to fix my techno woes? |

Noise reduction is a plug-in that can be added to any DAW software. What NR plug did you use in Pro Tools that you miss now in TW?
I use Safari as a backup incase Firefox has issues. Check the apple discussions regarding specific computers that have 10.5.7 issues. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Super Duper saved my butt a couple of months ago when my "identity" became corrupted - booted up off a firewire drive and kept working. I couldn't believe it when ProTools fired up - with all the plug ins - on a Firewire backup boot drive, and ran flawlessly until i reinstalled the OS on the main drive.
I agree: I never update the OS until i see it as "approved" on Digidesign's website. _________________ Jeff Berlin

Well, I took the leap and jumped to 10.5.7 from 10.5.6 and everything seemed to be fine until I tried to edit in Pro Tools 8. For some reason, any edit that I make to an audio sample is not reflected in the edit window. I haven't tried to uninstall Pro Tools and reinstall it, but I did try to run the update for PT 8 which has no effect. 10.5.7 is listed as being supported at DigiDesign so I sent in a support call to see if they will address it.
Fun stuff.
It's a good thing I have my Windows box to work with which seems to be running fine. |

Did you do the "combo" 10.5.7 update or the "pushed" update from Software Updater in the OS? Trust me, get the combo update if you haven't already. Google will find it for you on Apple's website. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I bought a MacMini refurb from apple.com in February and love it. But the Hard drive went bad after three months. I've always thought that these small laptop drives weren't sturdy enough to be used for mission critical work.
Is anyone booting from an external firewire SATA drive setup? How does this work? |

I believe that is a misnomer about 2.5" HD's, I find them overall more reliable in personal experience. Here's an article that helps explain why.
It's outdated, but still relevant.
You can get RAID enclosures for 2.5" drives now, and I am seeing users install them in desktop computers more and more as they get larger in capacity and cheaper. Since they are smaller, they generate less heat, which is the primary cause for drive failure. Less heat also means they use less power, so they are greener. They can also outperform 3.5" HD's in some cases!
But, as always, BACKUP... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

Sorry i didn't notice Nelson's situation earlier in this thread - upgrading to Tiger cost you ProTools 6.4.
Any reason you wouldn't want to run ProTools 6.9.2 ? It's the same as 6.4 for all practical purposes.. should run all the plug ins you had on PT 6.4. 6.9 runs on Mac OS 10.4.11
Unless you're using a Digi 001 or MIX System - those won't run on anything above ProTools 6.4. In that case you'll need a new interface, or an old Mac that runs Panther.

I love the sudden wave of SATA drive docks! It's about time we can treat hard drives like removable disks, because it is so practical to be able to put drives in a closet or safe for archive, but why buy another enclosure with power supply each time, and waste space?
I have a drive dock more like this one, which doubles as a card reader, very handy!
And you can't beat the price... _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

They sure are handy. I was looking for a FW800 dock with the media reader, however, couldn't find any... do you notice a big difference between the USB 2 and the FW? This is my first FW drive... all others have been USB... I received it Friday and look forward to testing transfer rates... |
