Most of these small recorders do not have great mic preamps when using an external mic.

Why not just buy a small cheap laptop or netbook vs. one of those?

Some people prefer to not buy a second computer just to record, or have no space other than a tiny closet to record in. No fan noise, reliable, simple, minimal parts, doubles as a USB audio interface if you DO want to record into your PC.
I think it is pretty cool...
Hope to do some real world tests soon, and compare the sound quality of the preamp/converter to the MicPort Pro.
