Yes & Yes

In order for X curve to work successfully, the audio that is mixed needs to be mixed in a space that takes into consideration the room curve. Sony, Dolby and THX rely on the X Curve as the foundation. That is why when final mix is done for picture the mix stage is EQed to X curve.

It took some hunting but I found online the specs for THX. They really did a job on keeping is out of the public eye.

1500 cube is the min. suggested by BBC. There were 3 ratios developed by BBC A,B and C. The dimension I posted were from the C ratio. According to F. Alton the C ratio is much preferred.

All X curve dimensions are based on Public Theater size rooms (minimum 15000 cu. ft. by volume) and based on (W) amplifier wattage TO the speakers and how many speakers are involved in what (S) configuration, NOT Home Theater size rooms. Small room acoustics are an entirely different set of circumstances.

In Home Theater and Home Based Studios; "bass traps" and corner traps are essential due to the inherent low end boominess of the actual room size. Most small room isolation booths - notice I am not naming any one particular brand - are very boomy due to this concern.

Acoustics are and are not a science. Acoustics are perceptive, which means what you hear and what I hear may be different based upon our own point of view. Science will help you crunch the numbers and determine the needs, but the actual "sound" of a small studio is determined what YOU the owner and user desire to hear.

Toodles

Question?

If X Curve is used in exhibition would you want your mixing environment to be tuned to the exhibition standard or to something that pleases you.

I personally would want to hear the mix as it would be presented to the audience. Reason is, if I like the sound using the exhibition reference then I would be more confident that the audience was hearing what I planed for them to hear.

Hey less we forget, the guy only wanted to know what to buy Product A or Product B

Smile it's true!

My old control room was THX certified, the people at Auralex helped with that. There is a spec sheet somewhere about THX certification, certain monitors, amps etc.

The basic rule is to tune the room, not your monitors. No eq in the signal chain to the control room. You wouldn't want to eq your mix to sound a certain way and then have the monitor chain be dishonest.

eventually taking your mix out to the car for a listen is always a good idea too.

but back to prefab vocal booths.... I've used one, and didn't like it.

Don't buy either they represent extremely poor value for money. Accoustically they need to be as near a dead room as is possible and most ring like a church bell. They need to offer a high degree of sound isolation and are about as isolated as a Football stadium on a Saturday afternoon.

I respectfully disagree with Philip...I have a Whisper Room and had to undeaden it at the request of several people when I first set it up.

I had tried just generally sound treating the office space where it is now, but with not a single closet in the space and windows in every room, plus being about a block from a very large intersection, it became more of a necessity than a luxury for me.

Not perfect by any means, but certainly better than a football stadium Wink and good enough, it seems, to have recorded final audio for a number of clients.

As with all things, YMMV.
