As explained to Caryn (which she has already experienced) the "presence" changes when backing away from the microphone.

To keep presence and allow for volume changes, turn your head slightly away from the microphone pickup element. Although you may feel weird thinking your are now listening to the back of your head, this trick almost always works.

Think of the pickup element on a shotgun microphone as a laser pointer shooting past your nose about four to five inches away from your face.

Using the side axis of your voice projection in relation to the mic element as a baseline, turn your head away from the microphone but still in the microphone pickup pattern.

You may need to adjust your proximity in relation to the microphone, but this will allow you to keep the presence, feel, and color of the microphone without over-driving the diaphragm of the condenser with LOUD voice-talkin'.

Good microphone technique is always a plus. Bad microphone technique however, is much more noticeable with microphones which were designed to be used at a distance (i.e.: Shotgun microphones).

Toodles

In the film/video world presence is also called perspective. On a long shot the perspective can be forced by using a plant mic with concealed recorders or a wireless mic. This forced prespective can be use for dramatic effect but it often considered as to unnatural, the long shotguns are preferred.

On the tight shot the hyper cardioids is use more often than the short shotgun and in some cases the cardioid is used for a open and natural sound.

When you consider it the presence for on camera dialogue and sound is very focused even when a short shotgun is as much as 2ft away from the talent.

Man, what a drag! That's not the first bad 416 I've seen purchased through Ebay. I had another client have a Ebay 416 serviced last year for around $300 through Coffey Sound, but they just send it to Sennheiser. Another client's 416 just started exhibiting the same "snap, crackle, pop" behavior last week, but he was lucky to have a second one to use.

I hope you got a great deal on it.

Presents? See, now you have Caryn in a box again....with Philip's bow. Instead of in a box, I would rather be in her presence than have her wrapped up like a present. That is just me though.

Me in a box... you know, I've been banging my head against the wall trying to figure out what to get my husband for his 40th birthday next week. That has possibilities.

Yup, I'll just stay in my studio the entire day.

Of course there's always you jumping out of a big birthday cake wearing nothing but frosting. I don't think he'd forget that birthday!

Creative minds at work here.....

People getting stuff through e-Bay and finding out it wasn't as advertised.

What will come next?

Actually, I keep away from most studio gear on that site for that very reason. It's more expensive, but if there's a problem, I can always go back to the original dealer and fix it, or get my $ back without any hassle.

Some of the scams on "vintage" gear is just scary.

Ladies and Gentleman, she'll be here all night.

And don't forget to try the veal.

Oh, and Yoda, I hear you.

But, I've been fortunate.

I bought both my Symetrix and my Telos Zephyr XStream thru eBay. Knock on wood... no major issues.

Though, I did call the seller of the XStream a number of times with questions and to make sure he was legit b/c there were a number of fraudulent XStreams listed at the time.

And, oh yeah, always make sure your stuff is from a non-smoking studio. Make sure it says that in the ad, or ask the question. My Symetrix came smokey as heck... I didn't think to ask about that. I did have to have Symetrix fix some things (bad pots) a few months ago. Not sure if that was due to smoke or not, but always better to just not have smokey equipment.

So far I have done nothing...lol....except continue to use it for jobs and 3 sessions now....One of the sessions was for one of my imaging jobs (a little closer to the mic than I normally go)....no problems at all and it still sounds awesome.....I am prepared for a recurrance though, perhaps.....I am handling it with Kid Gloves though...

only paid 600.00 for it....plus 20.00 shipping and "handling".....
