I've never been wild about the idea in general of having other people tell you what mic sounds best for you.

If someone says to you "Buy that mic and I'll give you regular work" listen to that person. I've never heard of it happening. The smart money buys a mic recognised by people in the industry as one able to deliver but the people buying you only care about what you do. If you need a mic with +25db gain at the 43000hz range, a pre with extra warmth and a compressor that makes the loud bits quieter except for those bits which aren't then you have your eye off the ball.

Are you a gear junkie? Enjoy your gear and finding the next great thing. I'm not, my stuff works for a living. I don't care how it looks or whether anyone with a UniSucks Imperial Waterdriven Hamster Cooled neutral Compoodler approves or otherwise. Find a nice clean sounding mic to be used in an accoustically dead room and leave the rest to people who know better than me and probably better than you too.

Phone call from somewhere near Washigton DC

Amy "Hi Philip. Can you tell me the best settings for my new Focusrite Voicemaster Pro?"

Philip "Bypass"

Amy "You're just a sh*t!"

How well she knows me!

Heh, that's my recommendation for the voicemaster pro as well. Though I think it's for different reasons.

Now weren't you bragging about having the "Platinum edition" of that thing a few months back...?

You always come up with the most colorful names for things.

As a fellow gearhead, I feel your pain/pleasure when it comes to mics. I love mics and enjoy experimenting and trying them out but can easily become too distracted by the whole thing.

I would encourage you to keep it simple, ala Philip. If it were me I would probably keep the NTK and the EV RE-20 and maybe the Studio Projects, though I don't know how they sound on your voice. I own 4 mics ;Sennheiser 416, Neumann TLM 103, Rodes NT-1A and Shure SM57.

Only the Neumann and Senn get any use. The Neumann, especially, took some tweaking, especially in terms of room treatment and mic placement, before it started to sound right.

I don't want to encourage even more distraction, BUT Sweetwater is pretty good about letting you try out mics and such and return them no questions asked if you are curious about some other mics out there but afraid to make the commitment of buying them(you have to pay for them, but can get your money back or choose another mic)
