Did the upgrade, still no improvement.
What I was getting was intermittent soft reboots. I'd be working along then suddenly "lost connection" and I'd look over and see the router going through it's POST lights blinkie. I tried a different power supply, no better. I moved it to my line conditioner, nope.
Actually that last bit I recommend to EVERYONE! If you have a line conditioner / UPS, put your network stuff on it. Because those little power bricks do not put out the cleanest of power, this helped other intermittent issues I was having. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Oh yeah, big fan of the use of UPS AND Power Conditioners.
They'll save your gear. Seriously.
On the flip side, have you directly tried plugging into the cable modem to see if the problem is actually on the ISP or modem side of the fence?
I had that issue when I first went to cable. Turned out that the cable leading to my house was too old and needed to be replaced.
But if you're still having issues, try the Linux kernels that are out there... sounds like the thing is out of warranty anyways, so have some fun with it before you replace it.
Who knows? It just might fix is the issue anyway. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Yup, that's how I isolated it to the router. With this D-Link I have now, no problems at all. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

I have never updated the firmware.
There may be a feature of some Linksys routers that will do a soft reboot if they sense a certain type of activity that they see as potentially malicious.
I noticed this would happen sometimes if either my wife or I was looking at MySpace...at some point MySpace did some update to something and it never happened again.
On some Linksys routers, you can trigger this soft reboot with 100% reliability by opening a command prompt and trying to tracert any external destination IP.
I've never checked to see if this is a feature / something that can be turned off in the SPI rules or something,.

Depending on the firmware version and model, I know that a soft reboot is possible through the web interfact GUI.
Some models also have a small button which they state is a "soft reboot", but since it basically cycles the power I tend to think of it more as a "hard boot" alternative to disconnecting the power and recycling the unit. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

LinkSys Access Point, and wireless receivers in my two-level house with 5 computers, and never ever had a problem with it apart from an occasional reset. (that's true)
Can't give you the model number on the AP 'cause I'm at work, but it's blue and black, and has two little antennas that fold off the back (that's a joke)
When you hold your hand close to it, little bolts of static electricity bridge the space between the AP and your hand (that's an outright fabrication).

Hell's Bells (can't believe I just said that... I'm becoming my grandfather),
I ought to start doing workshops and panels about the technology folks need to know about regarding home VO.
Well, not just me... we've got a few tech-savvy folks and a few studio junkies around here.
But we'd make a mint. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I was thinking Pat Fraley, considering some of the support he's gotten on this board.
And I'm told that he has sacks of money raining down on him.
Well, he does give so much back to everyone... it'd be like charging family.
*thinks for a second*
He pays double...
oh, wait... that's right. I can't make additional money based on the technical knowledge that I have. Blasted employer's contract and my own ethics.
//seriously though, soundgun has made a business out of this. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

There's a thought...
or I could use the money to get a graphic artist to help me with my logo, finally put up my website and use the rest for marketing.
Nothing personal, but folks in the creative industry make the worst clients.
(used to do IT administration for several NYC theatres; nearly killed a few clients... they make my current customer-base look sane by comparison, which is truly saying something) _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Any thoughts on these two (my old D-Link 614+ died today):
D-Link WBR-2310
or
D-Link DIR-625
No gaming whatsoever... the occasional apple trailer and youtube... but mostly I just serve my files to clients via CrushFTP. Range is not an issue in my home because of the layout - for example right now I'm using my neighbor's spare Belkin and getting really strong signal in both studio and living room pc, but I don't like the admin pages - plus it doesn't have the ability to assign a static IP to the machine I'm using for FTP (I have to do that via XP's control panel) nor is the admin protected as well as the D-link. If you surf to it's IP address it will display all sorts of network info - it will only ask for a password when you want to change something. Weird. |

George is right. Linksys is a bit cumbersome...no..... I mean way cumbersome, unless you're a tech. We just bought one, but ended up taking it back. Luckily we have AT&T as our provider and we picked up a nice plug & play router they offered that kicks out a strong signal, and it was truly plug and play, with just a few settings to configure. I don't know the tech specs off hand, but it works well. However, I only use wireless around the here for light-duty computing. If I am uploading huge audio files, I stick with the wire. _________________ Bobbin Beam
