Definition: Gobo
A gobo is a thin circular plate with holes cut in it to create patterns of projected light. The name may be derived from a contraction of "go between", or from "GOes Before Optics". Another possible origin is from the early days of Hollywood. When the Director of Photography wanted daylight excluded from some area of the set, he'd say "GO BlackOut". Members of the crew would run around putting black material between the sun and the set.
As used in audio: a Gobo is:
A thin, movable, audio reflection damper. The name may be derived from a contraction of "go between", or from "GOes Before Optomization (a.k.a.: processing)".

The thing that changes the color of a theatrical light is a "gel".
The Gobo (in theatrical lighting) is the cutout pattern.

Thanks for the definition of Gobo. Makes sense.
My husband helped me build a DAW Booth last year, after researching a solution to my sound issues, and visiting a friend who has a whisper room. One of the biggest tips I learned from him was to have the computer outside the booth and add a monitor and wireless keyboard & mousespace for the booth. Record, retake and edit all in one spot.
It definitely helps where I live anyway. Make sure you have the space for it. It cost about a third less than a whisper room. _________________ Bobbin Beam

CORRECTION: sorry. I meant that it cost about one third of the cost of a same size whisper room...not taking into account the cost of shipping.
My cost was around $1150. Compare to some rooms that go for 3-5K, plus freight. _________________ Bobbin Beam

Absolutely, I was thinking quite specifically about leaves 'projected' onto the stage and its changing colours...of course it might have helped if I had let you in on that bit. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com

I REALLY like the savings compared to the cost of something like the whisper room. But here's my big question Bobbin.....in your estimation, with those DAW booth plans, is building one of these things from the ground up something that you think pretty much anybody could handle? This would be me, and my lovely assistant (my wife), trying to construct this, and neither one of us have ever built anything, so I'm a bit hesitant. |

Brian Hart's dog helped with his.
Where's that image, Brian?
Also— didn't Dave Christi have a whole how-to with hollow doors from Lowe's? _________________ DBCooperVO.com

This one?
Here's the finished pics sans dog:
Sadly, I had to take a sawsall to it when we moved. My total construction was around $1200 if memory serves. My wife wants me to buy a prebuilt this time around. We'll see. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog
