Are you always such a worry wort?
The machines see inside these things, so all you have to say if they ask, is that it is a mic, a pre-amp and related cables. The new breed of TSA employees is considerably sharper than they used to be. It really shouldn't be a problem. (She says with fingers and toes crossed as she packs for her trip to DC.)
I always carry my mic and my laptop - I sometimes pack my pre-amp and power stuff in my checked bags simple due to the weight. But now that I have a computer bag with wheels and a handle, I'll probably bring it all on as carry on. _________________ Playing for a living...

Years ago in a time before TSA terrorist scans....My intrepid crew was returning from the Virgin Islands through customs in Puerto Rico and I knew that for the least hassle, make friends with the officials. No problem...we were quite a hit.
THEN--when my Mamiya camera with long lens inside a hand carried hard case passed through the X-ray as I stood with the custom officials watching the screen--there appeared an Uzzy sub-machine gun in MY case.
Imagine my shock, along with the officials', as I was asked to stand back as they grabbed radios and side-arms. Fortunately, as soon as they opened the case and realized the optical illusion, everything was again fine.

That is a dangerous assumption. How many TSA employees have experience in electronics or munitions? None that will be running the X-Ray. Laptops are ubiquitious, so they just have you toss them on the conveyor and no problema. A preamp is something a bit different and depending on the airport, employee, and current security posture, could garner you a bit of unnecessary attention.
Take the manual, but also take the wall wart / power cable. If challenged you can always offer to plug it in and prove that it is what you say it is (and yes, I've had to do that in the past with certain electronic gear... uncommon, but it works). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I agree with you, Yoda. Call me a "worry wort" all you want, I'd like to have my basis covered in case problems arise from ignorance. _________________ Jeff

I believe it was sometime around '99 when I was traveling to San Diego for a live broadcast with Radio Disney. I wanted the sound fx for our show- so we carried on a Replay machine. The guy at security handed me a screwdriver and told me to open it so they could poke around. We finally settled on just plugging the thing in- I really didn't want that thing coming out of my paycheck!
I've never had a problem since- and I have certainly traveled with my fair share of electronic gizmos! I don't think they are nearly as unusual anymore. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

OK, you win...I'll make sure I look like a mild mannered voice talker on my next trip - maybe carry a demo CD in case I need to prove it.
I remember a trip to Mazatlan Mexico to shoot a promotional film for a hotel - it was me (the producer, director, writer) and the female shooter - we brought a small 16mm film camera (MOT) and a couple of lights that looked like sun lamps. We were pretty young at the time, so we played student tourists. Got in and out without any documents.
Then a few years later while working for General Dynamics, we went just across the border to do some grand opening ceremony of one of the Maquilladoras (s and we had to have an escort from the Mexican government, lists of equipment with serial numbers and permission from the US government in order to get back into the US. But we were going in with a couple of vans of equipment and people that time. _________________ Playing for a living...

I carried my laptop, pre-amp, and mic in my carry-on to Vegas and had no problem.
I DID however have the manuals with me...great minds think alike 'pinto!...ohhh THAT'S scary!!!

I think that had more to do with the fact that you guys were defense contractors, lol _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

It has been my experience that SEA-TAC airport tends to be tougher from a security standpoint than a lot of other airports. I can totally understand Jeff's concern here. |

So I took another look at my PreAmp and given all the writing on it, I shouldn't have a problem. I mean, it clearly incidates what it is:

Jeffrey,
I often travel, and always take my equipment with me. When I travel light (for a short trip) and everything is in one bag, what I've learned is that it's your microphone that's likely to get the greatest scrutiny. So, I take the mike out of my suitcase, and open the box so they can clearly see it's a microphone when they look in the bin after it's been through the X-ray machine.
In fact, I just returned tonight from Pittsburgh with that exact scenario.
But, when I have a large suitcase to check, I follow Deirdre's plan and wrap all of my delicate gear in my clothing. It's worked flawlessly for several years that way now. (Of course, thus far I've not had the joy of having my luggage lost either.) _________________ Be well,
