waitaminit. Isn't this the same thing as the Nigerian bank scams?
"I am the son of royalty and due to an unfortuntae coup, I have to leave the country. But in order to do so, I need to wire 5 gazillion dollars to one lucky american. And all you have to do is wire me only 4 gazillion dollars..."

Point of clarification, don't send any money until it clears the ISSUING bank. Your bank will clear it in a few days, but the issuing bank may take weeks as Frank mentioned. If it's a forgery, the issuing bank will be able to tell and will reverse the funds. Just because your bank clears it, doesn't mean you're free and clear.
better yet, just ignore the whole dang thing. _________________ Jeff

Good point Jeffery. Wait several weeks or months before using the funds or doing anything with the money, and once it has been - say 90 days... then transfer the funds to yet another bank and wand wait another 30 days before using the money.
Yes, that is four months... by then the banking system shuld be on to a fruad, and if you are not out anything, you are not out anything by waiting.
P.S.: I prefer cash or gold, which ever is heavier.

I got the same one Robert got. What was really strange (aside from the obvious non-native English) was that the "scam" part didn't rear its ugly head until a couple of exchanges had taken place. There were specific scripts and some direction, demo requested, rates discussed, and then...bingo. That's what surprised me. Usually, those types of scams come right out during the initial response.
Needless to say, I was pi$$ed...and told him so in so many words. Surprisingly, he replied and apologized and was going to "explain to his client" my concerns. I won't hold my breath waiting. |

Hell, I have a friend who was selling her refrigerator on CraigsList and got a scammy sounding offer to ship it cross country. Even "certified" money orders can be fraudulent and the bank will take your deposit back if they get stiffed.
As Rosanne Roseannadanna used to say, "It just goes to show you, it's always something."

My wife is selling her car online and she got a scam proposal Email. Something like, "I'm in LA, but my client is in Canada and loves your car and wants to buy it now. He's going to send you a check for 21K [we're asking $14,500]. Just send us the extra $6,500 and and someone will come get the car."
She sent an Email back: "Yeah right." _________________ Donovan

Quote: | Big pay offered for a fairly simple, quasi-hynosis read (and, Lafontaine knows, putting people to sleep is my voiceover strength), but now the client wants to send me a cheque from his client for three times my voiceover quote and then I'm asked to SEND HIM THE DIFFERENCE! He maintains it's because from his base (Israel) and his customer's base (the UK), USD cheques take too long to clear.
To add to all this murkiness, my audition was - according to You SendIt - never downloaded on their side. But, of course, they profess to love my take.
I'm flushing it. Something's rotten, though I can't figure the scam. |
Robert, this is definitely a scam. The concept is the same, and is frequently used across many industries. What usually happens is some poor sucker is given a credit card to run, and, runs it for a greater amount than the merchandise, is requested to wire a portion of the fee and keep the rest. Later, the credit card is found to be bogus, and the sucker is out all the money in the transaction. Don't even engage with anybody soliciting this kind of deal. _________________ Bobbin Beam

On a quick read though this thread, I agree avoid this like the plague. Whilst I am not sure of the actual illegality (or not) of this type of action, doe sthe US have a central financial services regulator to which thsi could be reported.
I fully accept that they may (will probably) do nothing, but don't you reckon that someone should be told. I make a point of contacting Ebay and paypal every time I get a spoof email.....I believe that it will be the only waty for either organisation to be able to guage the amount of fraud/ potential fraud being carried out.
Liz, you are soooooo right.

Yet, having read all of the above. Paying $195 to audition for 867 jobs and end up with an audio book project paying $37 is deemed AWESOME, Great experience .gif" alt="W00T" border="0" /> All very odd.
Princess Mjbatutu Mbayee Pretendee from Ghana contacted me several months ago regarding a cheque from her dead father's estate. He was killed during an intensive country dancing workshop in a barn near Staines. Attempting an advanced multi-partner dosi-do he tripped and fell over a management consultant and got impaled on his slide rule. The amount of the cheque was $11,000,000 and for banking it, clearing and sending her money I got 30%. Last week Mjbatutu delivered the cash to me personally along with 4 prized goats. You all really need to learn to trust people. |
