I guess this will be the first bulletin board to have a "cold" shower installed... on-line. Until then, we'd better have a bucket of water nearby.

Your slate sets the mood for your performance, and you should always do it IN CHARACTER. Your job begins with your slate. I would never consider having some other voice slate me! Never miss a chance for the client to hear YOU! Everytime you open your mouth you are auditioning for work.

I've been making a living at VO for 27 years and I've never heard anyone use someone else's voice for a slate. This is counter-intuitive to me. Can someone explain why you would want someone else's voice on your audition or gig? I really want to know.

And then there's the debate as to whether or not to have another person of the opposite gender slate your main (generic demos), and/or custom auditions.....
or,
not slate at all and lead with your "Money Voice"....

I always have a slate for auditions but not on the demos.

By the way, Diane, your comments while in snark-mode always make me smile.

We're talkin' demo slates, not audition slates.

And there are 2 Rules about slating in character for an audition:

1. ALWAYS SLATE IN CHARACTER. For the reasons you mention—setting the mood, getting off with a bang.

2. NEVER SLATE IN CHARACTER. The client will never know what your baseline voice is and won't be able to tell if you really are a hick, or a New York bully.
