This is only true for the 64 bit version of Vista. |
I really hate to be the one to say this, but if this is really how Microsoft is going to be, it may be time to start looking to Apple for pro audio. I'm a long-time Microsoft junkie so it's really hard for me to say... but Macs are MEANT for multimedia... they always HAVE been.
OMG... I did not just say that... _________________ Dave "Christi" Felton

To be honest this is a smart move for Microsoft from a stability/security perspective. It will have a short term negative impact on some consumers since not all device manufacturers will be willing to abide, but long term it will work out.
That said, I am much happier doing my recording on a Mac. The PC worked fine, but I have had far fewer issues on my Mac Pro. |

Microsoft is in a tough position. Either they require signed drivers for security and stability or they get hammered when unsigned drivers are insecure or unstable.
And let's not confuse "Meant" for multimedia with "Attracted a rabid fanboy base". The only thing a mac is "meant" for is to push bits around, same thing as a windows pc. The hardware doesn't sound any better. The computer doesn't make anything look better. At the end of the day, a Voice over from a Mac sounds identical to one from a PC.
And we're straying into breaking DB's PC vs Mac ban here..... _________________ Jeff

Not to launch into a forbidden topic, but as frustrating as this "forced" upgrade situation has been for some, it's rather ironic that a major criticism of the fruity company was that they "Forced" upgrades on their users all the time... I guess even MS thought it was time to play hardball with end users.
My basic thought is that if you've already invested in the Windows-based environment and are feeling stuck with Vista at the moment, just wait a few months. Everyone else with catch up by the end of the year or fall to the side. They know they can't be indifferent about Vista. They have to keep up. _________________ Greg Littlefield

So far we're doing OK with the signal-to-noise ratio, guys. This topic is certainly one generating a lot of steam. It's ok to gripe about your own OS woes as long as you're not attacking another OS or user. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

And that is the basic nugget all of us Windows peeps need to take from this thread. Thanks for putting it so well Greg. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

But on the other hand, the Snowball just got a great review for VO work in, of all places, Electronic Musician. |

I actually think i'm going to bring the Gateway (and Vista) back this weekend and trade up for a Macbook. I was talking with a studio engineer and friend who's a big IT guy and they both said it was the way to go....as long as the Mac can use the router we have set up at home for the PCs, I'm going for it.
It's a big step for a PC gal.....I'm like one of Pavlov's dogs....I know what buttons to press to make the sound (or drool) so a new system means new buttons...oh....scarey! Wish me luck!

Moe,
As one who has had to learn to use a Mac workstation, though I'd been a Windows only guy previously, I think you'll find that it only takes a little while to retrain your finger memory. _________________ Be well,

Moe,
I have my MacBook sitting in front of my PC...love them both- work on them both. There are some things one can do the other can't...it's a nice relationship. Bob is right, the finger memory thing will get you a bit at first- but otherwise...they are very similar. You will like the video editing on the MacBook along with a couple of other fun features.
Don't be scared! You will be happy with your decision...either way! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Any computer that communicates via TCP/IP will work with the router, Moe. In other words... no sweat.
Hmmm... Maybe I should just put my day job information in my sig. lol _________________ Greg Littlefield

The great thing about getting a Macbook is that if you need to run Windows you can. Either using Boot Camp or by using Parallels or VMWare. I still have a couple of Windows a s I run under Parallels when I need.
