Kara,
Spend the next three months working on each of the first three voices I heard on the above sample. The fourth voice (old woman) is a bit outta your range I think.
Several months from now you should be primed enough to put together a killer animation demo. You have a natural Disney tone to your voice. It shouldn't be difficult to get representation from ICM, SBV, CESD, Atlas, etc. with a voice like that. You're gonna be one of those people who doesn't have to work hard to make it in this business. Just do what you're doing at the front of that sample file and you'll do just fine. _________________ David |

Dave,
Good heavens- thank you!! You are really way too kind. I agree- I do the voice of an old woman like I would do an impression of Don LaFontaine (not so great)! The 'young boy' voice is one I have used on DragonBall Z for the past 7 years...the little girl? Just a personal fav along with the 'Disney chick thing'. It's just some silly samples- I was trying to make Delvin laugh!
Rich- thanks for the advice...I really need to learn more about Pro Tools plug-ins! I think a mic-pre of some sort is my next step.
I think I'll also go with a telephone headset until I have money for something different. We only plan to stay in this house another year and a half...so the next house will REALLY be torn apart!! Hah!
Thanks again to everyone- this forum is THE BEST THING I HAVE FOUND!!! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Kara,
In regards to your inquiry about the sound of your audio... I think I read somewhere that you have spent some time behind the mic in radio? ...
When I listen to the sample that you posted, it sounds quite good to me... a pre-amp could help to warm things up a bit, but I don't think that any producer would have issue receiving a file of that quality...
What I think might be bothering you, may stem from the fact that you've spent time in radio... you're very used to hearing your voice with a fair bit of compression... It's not a stretch to think that your ear is simply trained to interpret the compression as normal, and anything has less than you're used to will sound as though it is lacking something. IT IS, but it's missing something that in the world of voice over, that it should be missing!
All in all... very impressed with the sample. I look forward to hearing many more great things (which can help you to purchase that new Avalon M5 PreAmp that will warm your voice up a bit )
Good on 'ya.

Brian-
I am quite certain you are correct. I did spend 11 years in radio and my mic was often compressed and 'pumped up' to make me sound older than I was. My only previous voice over experience is in professional production studios while I'm being directed. I don't ask any questions there- since I figure if they are happy, I am happy!
I hadn't thought of it that way- but I know you are right. I've recorded several commercials and a stage show from home- and I always ask, "are you SURE it's ok??" No complaints yet- so I'm going to quit worrying about it!
Thank you- that really helped! I'm calling Delvin (at Sweetwater) tomorrow to ask about a pre-amp...especially the one you just mentioned!

Agreed.
FWIW: Don't ask if your voice is okay... they'll tell you if it's not, or if they want something out of you. If you exhibit signs that you're not confident in your voice, then a casting director might do the same.
You don't want that.
Oh, ho... I see pictures on the website. Chris Sabat... That bastard owes me money!!! If you've got his e-mail, I'd ping him at his studio or via the boys in Dallas in 6 months or so when they do some more casting. Some of the younger voices will be right up his alley. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Good advice, thanks! Confidence is the most important part of this job from what I can tell!
Sabat is the best- we've worked together A LOT over the last 7 years! He's coming to Charlotte in June to visit my husband and I...coolest guy EVER! He owns Okratron Studios in Dallas now, I fly in every couple of months or so...I'm a Texas girl- born and raised! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Ahh yes, the Otakron5K guys. They're a hoot! He's still doing directing with Funi though...
I've not had the chance to work with him, but he's encouraged me to send my stuff to Dallas. From everyone I know that's had the chance to work with him, his rep is one of the best.
Perhaps when LM gives me a chance to run away someday...
As for the M5. Consider it. If you can't afford it, get an Onyx preamp, which isn't quite as good, but is nice and clean for VO (and 1/3 the price). It's one of the few sub-1000 preamps I do recommend, and occasionally use.
One more thing... if you're going to do character VO? Have 8-12 solid ones before you try selling any of them. Versatility is the key in that part of the business. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Greg,
I think I can say with confidence that Kara has more than a dozen characters. She's the whole zoo! (And I mean that in the nicest possible way.) _________________ Be well,

Kara,
I'll just add to this thread in the event you hadn't seen this older one in a search. http://www.vo-bb.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2118&highlight=
As I mentioned in that post, the Dynametric is a cheap alternative to the "real" (read: expensive) digital and analog hybrids from Gentner, etc. That said, I used mine just last week with a client and the session went flawlessly. As noted, I use mine with a mixer so that I can isolate and record (or not) both sides of the conversation on separate tracks.
While the link in my original post is to an auction which is no longer valid, the other info still is. Just check eBay occasionally, as every so often one does get listed. Or you can order directly from the Dynametric site, albeit at a higher price.
Good luck, and if you have any questions, you're welcome to PM me.
P.S. Nice demo!
EDIT: Just noticed a dead link in the earlier thread. Here's the current version at the manufacturer's site. |

Don- thank you for the links!! I will go read them right now! Does the type of mixer matter, or is a mixer just a mixer?? _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Well, like most equipment, there are mixers in pretty much every price range. Right now, I'm using this one (which is no longer made, but you may find occasionally on eBay or your local Craigslist).
As long as you have a couple of channels which have pan pots, and you have the ability to split the output into channels 1 and 2 (or L + R), you should be okay. |

ok, this may be a dumb question, but how do people with mixers get the sound into the computer? Do you go through the inputs of a pro-quality soundcard?
I ask because, like Kara, I have an Mbox and I love the USB interface. Stays 100% digital and I don't need a swanky soundcard. _________________ Jeff

Well, she's in the right place then.
Nice to see that we have some friends in common too (albeit I haven't seen the goober in almost two years, hopefully soon though). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser
