Perhaps in your letter, you should explain that the client may want to contact a full service agency to properly prepare the campaign and work out the final details. At that point, encourage them to then contact you for the final presentation production.

Amy's reply encompassed a great deal of generous information, and taking into account the time she had already spent with this uber-needy client was more than necessary.
I agree that we do a great service when we help educate developers, but we can't allow people to take advantage of our time. It's really our most precious asset.

Maybe we should all describe the levels of involvement we are able to provide, making sure no one gets confused, in our web and demo presentations.

Possibly!
However, I feel it is a better thing to have as a discussion point in the first part of a new correspondence. It gives the seeker an intelligent place to begin his or her queries.

Amy,

I agree with Deirdre, that your letter was far more gracious and informative than your client warranted. Treating even problem clients like this so well speaks highly of you and your professionalism.

Years ago when I lived in Chicago I was listening to a radio telethon for the Chicago Symphony. Samuel Magid, at the time co-concertmaster of the orchestra, was being interviewed as part of the telethon. He was asked if the orchestra played better for certain conductors than for others.

His reply was "Of course. Some conductors are better at leading and bringing out the very best of performances than others." He was then asked if a poor conductor ever hurt the quality of their performance.

His reply was, "No. We are the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. There is a level below which we simply will not go."

I've always tried to live and work to that same standard. No matter how shabby or unprofessional a client may turn out to be, there is a level below which I, as a professional, will not go.

Amy---Congratulations on your new freedom and enjoy the snack in the kitchen!
Your letter was great, and my favorite line is one I somehow need to incorporate into a daily mantra and use as code:

Quote:
I would love to be the voice of your presentation, but you need to get to step #5

(ref.:#5 Then give the script, and preferably the storyboards, to the voice over artist, who records it)

Sticking out Tongue Bitchin Sticking out Tongue Bitchin

edit: that was really supposed to go under your 'update' but...oh well.
