Are you guys visualizing (as I am) all of us toting these contraptions to Vegas? We could have a little display of our handiwork. Maybe a contest for the prettiest one!

While looking into acoustic foam to make my own contraption, I was overwhelmed with the choices of types of acoustic foam. There are slats....pyramids etc....2 inch, 3 inch, 4 inch pyramids. I've noticed in the pictures that pyramid type acoustic foam was used, but what size pyramid? does it matter? what is the difference in the slat style and the pyramid style and the varous sizes of pyramids? I'm a bit confused on what to get for a box 16" x 16" or bigger. Is anyone an acoustic foam guru that knows the answer to these questions? Thanks in advance for whatever insight you can provide. _________________ TG2

That's funny. I used to have to record the sales manager for a local Toyota Dealer each month (he loved to hear his voice on the radio). He didn't like coming to the studio, so I'd take the Edirol R-1 out and record on location. I finally suggested that we sit in one of the cars to get the "showroom sound" out of the recording.
Just FYI, the 2006 Avalon XL has the best sound of any of the Toyotas we ever recorded in. _________________ Dave "Christi" Felton

Tom,
Considering that the container is a soft foam/vinylclad cooler itself...you could probably go fairly cheap with the eggfoam you find on ebay. It's not like you're covering a hard surface.
Now that I'm posting I forgot what H2 used....something of that sort right? _________________ Wicked huge.....in India.

Has anyone considered using a regular roll-about suitcase for a portable booth? I haven't tried it yet, but seems you could also use loose pieces of foam to carry your pre, mic and computer in the case as well. |

Rob, makes me realize that the VO2GO kit I build for people could itself be used as an acoustic treatment for the mic/room. Just set it up on the desk on the wheels, open it halfway, and put the mic inside the space. The case is fully lined with foam, so it would work pretty nicely.
Brilliant! Might not be as effective as a Harlan's box (which I've provided for many people, thanks Harlan), but it's one less thing to carry and could still be very effective.
Here's a picture of the VO2GO:

Thanks, Bob. I am always open to ideas for improvements. When I can find the appropriate manufacturer, I want to have a custom built case that allows me to have all the gear mounted and pre-connected inside. open the case, plug in the power and ethernet, and you are ready to work.
That will be VO2GO 2.0. Open to any ideas for improvement!
Also considering an alternative to the Mbox2 Mini/Sound Devices MM1 combo, although for Pro Tools users, there isn't much. The options open up considerably for non-Pro Tools users, naturally. I use the Sound Devices USB Pre currently, but am considering the Apogee Duet for the Mac users.
Anyone do a USB Pre vs. Apogee Duet shootout? _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.

I dug around the internet this summer and found Harlan's article now posted here. I had already experienced the porta-booth magic in Vegas thanks to Liz, and I was all excited to make my own.

The manager said that to fold the cube, one would remove the "sticks" that are the frame; something that is easy to do.
So, while it sounds like it would work...The Home Box currently on The Container Store's website is apparently NOT the twist & fold type.
The article number that Harlan mentioned did not bring up anything in their computer. I'm wondering if the one on the website is a new model...they do call it "new" in the copy.

The above mentioned is the one that I have. The customer service (phoe) gal was 'almost positive' that it twisted flat. It doesn't. You have to mess around with the metal sticks. I could handle that, but I've purchased two desktop stands in an effort to fit my Rode mic inside. Tripod or flat base, it's just too tall. (Am I doing something wrong??) Maybe you can't tell, but it's barely scratching the top. And that's without the top acoustic square. Very disappointing. You DEFINITELY need 16x16.
I've read somewhere that Target has the twisting kind. for $10. Before my next travels, I'll check it out.
I purchased my 12x12 Auralex (so he said) for $3.95 each (or so) from Guitar Center.
And by the way, this is my first success ever are posting a picture here! .gif" alt="W00T" border="0" />

Harlan is way cool. He always gives a quick response to questions, even from someone like me. The Porta-Booth is the coolest thing ever and I really dig seeing the Senn 416 in the mix.
Thanks for sharing DB. |
