George, a radio station I once worked for (in another life) used the senne. It was okay for an over processed medium market AM rocker in 1976. Good luck.
This is a senne I used in 1976. Can't remember the model or if the 421 was even made back then. It is in my profile picture. _________________ Gregory Best

my first two radio gigs were with Senn 421s
third station had an RE20 which at the time I considered a major upgrade. Still like it better than the 421.
Fourth station had an SM5.....that was when I knew I was big time. |

I found the 421 flat compared to an AKG D1000e I used across town at another station. It had a better audio chain too though. The AKG is an inexpensive dynamic akin to the SM58. _________________ Gregory Best

Interesting test with many of the often used mics!
421s are one of the best tom drum mics. His voice is a bit pushed and percussive and has little low end to it. So, he talks like a tom, so he gets a tom mic. I used to own a 421 and I thought it was great. I liked it for singing, but it didn't work on my voice for voice over. I do prefer my Senny E935 to the 421, but even the E935 has been relegated to being a talkback/Skype (hello! wait a second while I run to the booth!) microphone. It does get a few gigs now and then that require crazy decibel levels. I used it sparingly for corporate narration and the clients said they liked the sound.
As for the other Noomanz that weren't a 103, thanks for playing! _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

The SM7B was about 2db lower in level. It was the clear winner, in my ears. TLM-103 comes in second. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

OK... it's now 6 votes for the TLM 103 and 7 spread across everything else. Comments only reflect an honourable 2nd place... C'mon people, inquiring minds want to know WHY?
Is it 'cos it's shiny? _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

OK, I thought the TLM-103 had a nice timbre and roundness. But, it also had some sibilance.
The SM7B when brought up to the same level as the other mics had a nice balance of highs, mids, and lows. No sibilance issues.
All of the mics sounded at least OK. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

I listened. But did I hear?
Not much difference to my ears.
Of course, I'm in the same camp as others here with the disclaimer that my hearing it not nearly what it use to be.
The 421? A lot fuller which made me like it on this guys otherwise "thin" voice. I used the 421 almost exclusively during my Radio Days and typically would use its variable bass roll off down at least one notch because I liked to "eat" the mic.
I think it also needs to be said that a good voice will sound good on almost any mic...but probably only a professional voice talent would get the extra 10 or 20% improvement from an OK mic..to one that is considered "excellent."
Whereas...a poor voice...not so much. Even on the best mic in the world...still...not so good.
And, for the suggestion that we should "google" someone's political beliefs prior to doing business with them....well...I don't think this forum is the place for the kind of language I could use to describe what I think of that. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |
