Thanks, but, None of that. Conversations with Adobe point toward Adobe software. |

Another alternate answer could be heat. IF you computer is working hard while you're away and it's frozen or hung up when you get back...perhaps it's overheating.

If the problem is sleep mode, screen saver or heat build-up, then other software is likely to lock up also. When Adobe Audition is THE ONLY program that is locking up, then I focus on what is it about Audition that is making my life unpleasant. |

I also have a Rain computer. Corei5 Quad Core, 8g ram, 2 - 1TB 7200 HDD - I can't remember what else. Win 7 - 64bit. ports galore. When I was speaking with them about what I wanted they told me they had 2 of these they had built for B&H but then B&H decided to upgrade something - so I got a good deal on it. They're about 45min from me so I picked it up and they installed my software. They also saved my (9? year) old Carillon at the same time - the second time they've rescued it. They're good people. And I like the computer. |

I see your point. I was thinking "computer" when the problem could simply have been buggy Adobe software.
(I'm a Sound Forge Pro guy)
Here's a thought. I know for a fact that if I am using my audio editing program that it wants EXCLUSIVE control of the sound card. ...and will not load the audio card if anything else is accessing it. You might try DISABLING your "system sounds" to make sure that your computer is not trying to "beep" at you for some reason while your away and seizing control of the sound card. Or, if that's inconvenient because of email alerts, etc. You might try creating an alternate profile that you can boot into when you are doing critical (walk away) audio processing.
But then, there is also the possibility that some of your 32 bit plugins doesn't want to "play nice" with your 64 bit program.
BTW, George's suggestion about the "ultra small" PCs is a great idea. I had forgotten about that category. I once looked into them to use as a small server for a business application. They use very little electricity,(which actually saves you money over a desktop) have no moving parts and can be plenty powerful to handle audio editing. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |

You guys rock. Thanks for all of the input! I really appreciate the time you took to add your input because it's been many years since I've had to buy a recording computer.
Since it will be outside of the booth the noise is not a factor. It will strictly be for recording voiceover as we have other 'puters to play with for other audio.
Thanks to this sounding board I get to look forward to researching your recommendations! _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

Sounds like the bottom line is, the bottom line. Fact is, audio recording is not an especially demanding task for a computer. Even a five year old used one for a couple of hundred bucks is likely to be more than adequate for the task, especially if it has no other jobs it needs to perform. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

Mine is several years old but has become so sluggish and is wasting my time. Clearly it doesn't know how important I am! _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. Bonded by sound.

If you have the money to spend, get a liquid-cooled system. They can be very expensive but perform like a BEAST and can be totally silent. _________________ Corey "Vox Man" Snow

OK... I think we're starting to get into the area of getting a Ferrari to drive to the corner store
Liquid cooling is possibly a viable option if you're a hard-core gamer overclocking to the max... personally, I think getting the system where the whole motherboard is suspended in a tank of mineral oil is the way to go... cool looks, cool operation and a real conversation piece
Seriously... Mandy gives us a big clue... "has become sluggish". However diligent a user you are, Windows will clog with cruft and grind to a halt unless regularly given a cleansing enema.
Back everything up, nuke and pave... you may be surprised how well it works with a shiny clean operating system. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I'm really great at back up and maintenance. I've removed a lot of things I no longer use on it as well. It's a Dell, running XP, and has been a great computer but the snags and catches and has done so with a little more frequency when I am recording. It is a real waste of time. It would be better served by taking everything off and letting the kids use it for school work. I'm taking steps to make things more efficient around here and now is the time to get the new computer and not worry about it for another 10 years. _________________ 006 member of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Mic. I did the same when I was a Windows guy... it can actually make the PC faster than when you got it because you're getting rid of the pre-installed cruft that litters most new machines. In fact, I would always recommend that a NEW machine have the same treatment as well. There are just too many bits of crap that come along with a Windows pre-install. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Yep. Good advice.
That's why I set up all of my Windows computers with all of the data and the operating system on two different drives (or partitions). That way, whenever things get sluggish I can simply "restore" the operating system back to an earlier version without having to change the data. Typically takes about 10 minutes.
Windows is famous for getting progressively sluggish over a period of time. Many techs will routinely "rebuild" widows about every six months.
But it is amazing how people will use computers in completely different ways. Some will always go to the "main menu" to run programs. Others will always have "links" on their desktop. My wife has a nasty habit of putting "hyperlinks" on her desktop instead of leaving them in her browser. The result is there is not a SINGLE spot on her computer screen that does not have an Icon. It's a complete MESS. Strange how her computer "housekeeping" so closely resembles her real-life. _________________ "I reserve the right to be completely wrong." |
