Or just use it with an external preamp. I definitely look forward to hearing the preamp on the Balance. The Duet 2 preamp is very clean and sterile, but I've read that the pre on the Balance is not quite so sterile. Should be here on Thursday! |

George....
I see no reason why the Balance couldn't be used with an ISDN codec....
The Balance provides a button for direct monitoring thru its own headphone jack, but a mix-minus would require the software patch bay in the included Reason software. If you've used a real patch bay before, the virtual one makes you feel right at home. Basically drag and drop to create any routing you desire. Very similar to what's been done with the Focusrite 18i6 or Roland OctaCapture, just a little simpler to use.
As far as direct monitoring goes.... From a strictly hardware setup, Chan1 is left, Chan2 is right. The software, of course, will allow you to assign, pan, center, and mono/stereo to your heart's desire. Since I'm already a Reason user, I'm usually monitoring thru the software, anyway. I got into Reason for music a long while back, so, for me, it's comfortable. It's very intuitive, unlike some others....
If you pull the headphone plug slightly out of the jack, you can have your voice in both ears while direct monitoring, if it really bugs you. Since I often work without cans, it's not an issue for me.
Haven't had the gain be an issue with the mics I favor. For a dynamic, perhaps it might be a little weak. I dunno. I'll have to drag one out of the closet sometime and see.
All in all, George, I love the clean pre's and converters. It just sounds good. It's ergonomics are well thought out, and it's stupid easy to work with.
And if you're willing to learn and work with the Reason software, the Clip Safe function alone is worth its weight in GOLD. _________________ Don Brookshire

I can learn anything, but many of my clients can't tolerate the software interface monitor mixing methods. The USBPre2 is more flexible in this regard, but twice the price. The SPL Crimson is looking VERY cool, can't wait to give it a go. What I want is the routing of the Mackie 820i with fewer channels, no EQ knobs, more gain on the preamps, and a smaller chassis. _________________ If it sounds good, it is good.
