Hah!
That'll be the day.
Besides, we had pizza and salad, so it really WAS awesome.
It's all about the lunch. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

|

I have to share this story. I was hired by LucasArts to do a Star Wars CDROM job. The studio is about 2 minutes from my home in Studio City. I have three parts. One is described as an "Ed Asner Sound." My friend Darragh O'Farrell is directing and there's a new producer. So I tell Darragh (who's always up for anything), "I can't do this part. Ed will get mad. I'll get him in to do it." I call Ed, tell him that they want me to do his voice, and it will take me a half an hour to do it better than he can. He curses me out (he's really good at that), comes walking into the studio five minutes later, and does the role. As he's about to leave, Darrah says to me, "what do I pay him?" I say, "not more than me." The fun part was seeing the producer's reaction when Ed said, "who's f***in' brillant idea was it to get this putz in here to do me?" |

My respect for Mr asner just grows and grows.
Studio City? One instinctively knows that the unemployment office has valet parking.
"Morning. How are you?"
"Not sure, haven't got to this morning yet am doing re-takes of last Thursday. Had a fight with my partner. I was great but he didn't prepare".
"OK. Have a nice day"
Mutter "Everybody's a director!" |

Good show DB. I missed the one Pat did with Jim Alburger and Penny Abshire a while back.
Pat -- are you going to do another ADR session with Jim and Penny for us San Diegans?
Will you be back down for a weekend at Jim and Penny's Commercial Clinic soon?

They just had Bob Bergen down this past weekend for his character workshop and I was able to do that - been waiting for Penny to post the pics so that I could slap one up here.
Quite fun - people came from Kansas City, Vegas, San Berdoo, LA and SD. Nice small group of about 10 or 11.
So, yes, Pat, you'll have to try to work it into your schedule! _________________ Playing for a living...

There was another fellow from Boston at the session in LA! You don't know until you get there sometimes. _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

Don't do an ADR workshop unless it's in a studio/stage that actually does ADR for films. The energy of the previous pro performers is felt immediately upon entering the space - and you can really tap into that.
It sounds like hocus pocus (SDK?) but I wouldn't tell you if it weren't true.

Yep-- there's serious Mojo in a real studio.
Anthony, I know I've asked you before, but what is SDK?
All I can think of is sou desu ka which is Japanese for "Ain't that right?" _________________ DBCooperVO.com |

The Mojo left behind from those who have worked on the ADR Stage before we arrive is "failure." It's the nature of ADR/Revoicing. It's the highest failure ratio of all voice-over genre. With the exception of Donald Sutherland, who is uncanny, everyone I've ever worked with fails repeatedly during the process of getting it right. It's the way we DEAL with the failure that is of great import. Humor, mainly, but patience with onesself, grit, and plain pretending that our failure isn't bothering us. The good news is that we all know what we're up against, and after it's all done, we succeed at real magic: putting our voice on another's lips. That's Mojo. |

Well said Pat.
I need to look into one of your classes soon...if even just to acquire the skill of converting failure into mojo. That is a great skill to work on in this biz. I know I would get an immense amount more than that....but to me that is huge. Good stuff! _________________ Ben

The great LA voice coach Brodie Castle said at one of her seminars "Failure is an 8 letter word. We embrace its mischeif and grow from the cathartic anger it creates within. ADR is the meta-physical. The greats astral project themselves onto the set and breathe life onto celluloid. The others just grate and suck ass big time innit....Booyakkashah!*".

Banksey-with that kind of wisdom, please let me sign up for your instruction.
And Ben Wils-The New Testament encourages us 43 times to "encourage one another." It always reminds me of the optimistic kid out in the pasture, digging through horse manure. His father comes out and asks him what he's doing. He says, "with all this shit, there's GOT to be a pony!" |
