Interesting to ponder how many auditions are listened to on smartphones and tablets..

More often than not, I check my submissions on my little Altec USB computer speakers before I send off, as opposed to my studio monitors..

With the supply exceeding the demand in the VO market, I would say that a "good read" isn't really all you can hope that talent buyers recognize. I would venture to say that talent buyers get an awful lot of "good reads"'.. more than we would care to know, possibly.

There are very few audio engineers in the workflow of US productions anymore. Even final audio files end up in an editing bay, dropped right into Avid or FCP. Makes me sick.

Yeah, most of the time I'm sending processed (but tastefully so!) audio unless I know that it's going to a decent editor/studio. I'll save a raw session file and if I get a push back (has never happened) on the processing I can dip into that.

Ah...when I used to work at a production house and we had one dedicated audio engineer and studio for every two editing suites...those were the days...we would take the streetcar to work and it only cost 5 cents. Wink

so can anyone recommend a good compressor plug-in? I'm not much for
EQing auditions, but like to compress/limit a bit.

Currently I'm tracking with a small amount of compression but would like to have a good plug-in as well.

What DAW are you using? Or, I guess what I'm really asking is what plugins do you have available to you now for free?

currently on a Mac mini using Amadeus Pro and it has the basic VST plug-ins

I also have the Camel Audio Crusher which has some pre-set plug-ins that aren't bad.

I have on board compressors on both of my pres, but am not always crazy about the results with those.

Seriously, as you're on a Mac, I wouldn't bother with anything other than the OS supplied Core Audio Units (AU), I have a lot of time for the Dynamics Processor... the presets are very good starting points and I find that it can be very gentle and transparent when needed, or can be cranked-up if you're looking for something a bit more belligerent...

+1 to Bish's comment - exactly what I was going to day. The AU core audio processors built into the Apple OS are really good. You don't need anything more than the supplied Dynamics Processor - in fact you can both gate and compress at the same time.

I'm pretty sure George is with us on this as well Smile

Apple seem to have a great philosophy of putting good production tools inside the OS. We see this happening all the time with iOS as they increase the system's functionality and third-party aHobo Tounge developers have to change their business model.

A lot of the third-party plug-ins are very good indeed, and they have built themselves a well-deserved reputation on doing a workmanlike job. Mostly, this was because there were big gaps in the functionality of the DAW software packages, and nothing in the OS that really helped. Also, there's a great market in modelling the plug-ins after existing outboard equipment and trading on the name. Of course you want the same compressors that Abbey Road and Record One have! Having a good (and fashionable) VST plug-in suite was a good business to be in.

I think Apple would do well to push the capabilities and flexibility of Core Audio. They choose not to (maybe because they seem to be pulling away from Pro AHobo Tounges & hardware to a certain extent), but just keep improving it in the background. It seems to be audio production's best-kept-secret!

I normally use the compander in Audition, but I really like the Peak Compressor by sinus for a clean sound, and the DensitymkII for that heavily processed but smooth and warm sound. Both are free and available at kvraudio.com I also use the Baxter EQ for glossing things up a bit (again from kvr) - subtle but effective.

Although most people hate the company, I still think the Wave Rennaissance collection is custom made for VO. There's the dongle to deal, but the Renn Channel, Renn EQ, and Renn Vox along with the L1 or L2 limiters had worked out for me
