My NTK had a Sovtek and upgrading to a NOS Telefunken tube made a substantial difference, much more so than the Amperex and Mullard tubes I also tried.

I'm a big fan of Mike Joly over at www.oktavamod.com for Rode NT1a mods.

I'm planning on giving one away at FaffCon5. He's a great guy, his customer service is top notch and I have three of them so far.

Jim,

Change the tube. You know when a tube is getting old or is at the end of it's audio life when you are getting hiss. A Mullard wold be a good choice for the NTK. Or, as Chris said, the Telefunken is a top of the line mod which is easily done.

Besides, it can't hurt.

Jim, I might still have the old tubes lying around. I'll check, but as I remember both of them had some kind of markings on them.

Thanks everyone. After looking up the prices on the top 3 tubes, I've decided it wouldn't be worth it to throw that money into a 7 year old mic that I originally bought used for $400. Frank, the NTK isn't exhibiting any hiss...possibly it's getting a little bass-shy. And, as I said, I always could return to my AT-4050.

Jacob, I apologize for highjacking this thread!

Later, Jim
